So I voided my eeepc warranty by replacing the HDD with a SSD last month and just this Sunday the screen display died, the backlight works but all the little crystals have gone on strike, was running sweet with unbuntu netbook remix as well.

Now the video ouput is fine as I can use the d-sub cable with a monitor (it's onboard intel gfx)

So since it's got no warranty what I want to know is, is it a dead LCD screen or something other part, will buying a replacement screen off e-bay resolve this issue?

On a side note, my nokia 6700 classic screen died on Saturday the day before my eeepc died, both devices just under 1 year old! Have already ordered a replace screen for that from the UK but the eeepc screens are a little more pricey so peace of mind required.

Can't you just put the HDD back again or there some sort of case seal? Shouldn't your phone still be under warranty?

Are you sure you have voided the warranty? Normally replacing the HDD does not void a warranty as it is considered a user serviceable part.
Unless of course the warranty specifically lists that you cannot replace the HDD I would still be putting in a claim.

eeepc only allows for the ram to be easily replaced, in order to replace the HDD one must take most of it apart and there was a seal over the internal screws that clearly stated warranty void if removed.

Bought the phone in Belgium so can't be arsed chasing that up, besides, it was $22nzd to get a new screen sent over from UK and they're very easy to replace. The eeepc screen seems like it'll be straight forward, just want to be sure it's the screen and not something on the m/board before spending $100nzd on a replacement.

So no one else experienced this happening to a LCD screen? I've heard of backlights failing.

If not i'll see how the nokia screen replacement goes and if good i'll commit to the eeepc screen replacement...what's the worst that could happen!

It sounds as though it's either the cable or a screen, as you know the Ebay screens for the 7 and 10" models are pretty cheap :) first off though, take it apart, check the screen connection!

The backlight is running off a separate cable usually, next to the mini LVDS on the EEEs

What model is it? I've had a 1005HA and a 4G and I haven't really had any screen issues, more memory/hdd

It's the 1005HA that i've stuck a 2GB stick in along with the ssd with linux instead of xp, was running like a charm

I did wonder if they were separate cable connections, will have to pull the screen our and check. I pulled the middle tray out to check the connection to the motherboard was good which it was.

Thanks for info.

damn, yeah if the screen is still firmly plugged in, then it's likely the panel has died, so yeah best to get another screen off Ebay eh

I haven't really encountered any where the video card has died yet, have you tried http://forum.eeeuser.com/ they are pretty good, that's where I used to go when I had my 1005HA, now I'm saving for an M11X ;)

Oh also, before going too much furthur have you tried:

- Putting in the old ram stick and rebooting?  Might just be lose ram connection
- Remove the battery and hold the power button down for a while to reset the CMOS
- If you have the case off, short the cmos pins(two pins which has CMOS below them, use a paper clip or screw/pliers

That's the other thing it could be, memory, since it's sharing video memory maybe it's incompatible, had a similar issue with a Zotac Ion board which was sharing memory and artifacting, turns out a memory stick was toast in it.
