Hi,

I'm a newbie here and as the title suggests I'm looking at getting a new laptop.

What does everyone think to Compaq and Asus? I've had neither in the past and I'm interested in build quality, how long they've lasted, issues, what to avoid, that kind of thing.

Any comments would be much appreciated.

Personally, not that impressed with Asus build quality and durability (exception: they were way ahead in SFF for a long time), but they seem to be getting better. In a blind selection I would pick the hp/compaq.

In reality, there are a lot of other factors like price for spec, and what I'm going to use the machine for. Asus always have some good price/value points in their range, and if it is going to be almost always on a desk or infrequently moved between desks that could be a go.

Describe what uses you want to put it to - that usually narrows it down to a only few models, and the decision gets vastly easier from there.

+1 price and spec is one thing
But I will pick Asus over compaq

MOBILE: Huawei P30

Yes, maybe I should have been a bit more specific. I dont do gaming and I dont do a lot of downloading (just music mainly), so the laptop would be just for basic home use. Internet, Skype, emails, basic word and excel documents and a little bit of movie watching. I do like my music though!!
I've got a couple of external hardrive's already so 320gig would be fine for me.

I'm just after a nice solid dependable laptop. I would use it for work, but just using what I've suggested above, I wouldnt be using powerpoint or doing presentations or anything like that.

same use for me too really
I am happy with my current Asus, been using it for 2 years now, no problem at all.
Whereas a friend of mine bought a compaq last year, and she already sent it back to the factory twice to get the motherboard fixed.
The built quality for compaq computers is a worrying factor, considering the cheap price for compaq pc, good things no cheap, cheap things no good.

Asus has my vote. When I last looked they had 2 year warranty out of the box which has to be a plus (CGA arguments aside)

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

If you are looking at the consumer range of HP/Compaq then I would stay away.
Business range is great though.
Asus would be my pick first though either way.

Thanks guys, went for the Asus in the end. Hopefully start moving things over from the old laptop this weekend.
