Hey gusy looking at replacing an IDEOS x5 which has a terrible battery. The user needs maps, wireless hotspot, exchange support and an awesome battery.

Any recommendations?

OH BTW needs to be Android.

Motorola Defy Plus ? though not particularly cheap..

LG P500 has a relatively large battery and is cheap. I've had problems keeping mine from waking all the time but that's probably a personal app/config problem.

There are three questions to ask, What does the user consider to be good battery life, how long does the battery last now and is this for private use or for business?
If it is not for business, I would consider throwing a custom rom on it. Oxygen, cm7 or miui seem to give an easy two days battery. You could also try the official Huawei Gingerbread update as well. The final should be out this week, fingers and toes crossed.

I just suggest this because android, cheap and long battery life are not generally words found in the same sentence! The X5 also has a good battery, but the froyo rom it has does not have good power management so a gingerbread based rom can really improve things vastly.

Hi thanks for the advice. Its for business so don't really want to play with ROMs etc.

Yea I realize that those 3 don't go in the same sentence lol. I guess my point is I'm not too worried about speed, features etc. as long as it has those 3 things looking for good battery life and if we have to pay a little more for it, so be it.

P500 is good, particulary if you make sure data/wifi are disabled when not in use. G/f gets a good 3-4 days out of hers, admittedly just used as a glorified iPod and for texting mostly.

Performance also improves dramatically when a custom firmware is installed, but it can be quite difficult to do depending on what version it has on it OOTB.

Yeah my parents just purchased new phones. One went traditional Nokia candybar styles, Nokia C2 something, and the other Huawei X5. One lasts a week or more on standby with mild use, the other a day or two. As mentioned above, turning half the crap off when not needed has a huge impact.

Tasker or other apps may be worth looking into to do the likes of turn off the wifi at 10pm and on again at 7am etc etc. Just be careful what people are used to as in the smart phone world that may not be realistic.

Why not just get a second battery and charger? Sometimes an extra battery can be dirt cheap like just ten bucks (you can look up the price of an x5 battery on trademe)

Back when I was a bike courier that was normal for me.

Couple of extra batteries for the PDA Phone (old version of Windows Mobile) and an extra battery for the RT.

Charge it all up at the end of the day as usual!
(of course the car couriers had it even easier, just use a car charger all day long)
