This thread should be moved to the laptops forum.
Just recently got 2 x Lenovo E520 with 6GB RAM at under $1000 each (refer thread in laptops forum for details).
Price was a special offer, so not sure if available now or not.

Dell have one on sale at the moment: http://configure.ap.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?oc=u510316nz&c=nz&l=en&s=dhs&cs=nzdhs1&model_id=inspiron-15r-n5110

Hopefully that link works.

Why do you want all the power of an i7 if RAM isn't a factor?

I'd imagine because generally, you can upgrade RAM anytime, if you want to budget it out a little, let the laptop that'll serve your needs for the future today, suffer for a few months, upgrade user serviceable components as needed.

heh, I'm in the same boat

looking around for a laptop, preferably as powerful as possibly so i7 would be nice but also would like it under 1K

yet I am not so fussy about RAM, can just fix that at next pay day
