I'm one of the first customers at BigPipe, and still quite happy.

We've bought a brand new house in Lower Hutt. All good and awesome, except for the fact we don't have internet.

The build has told me that there is only UFB, no ADSL. ADSL installation would cost $199 anyway with BigPipe. So, thought to get UFB straightaway. BigPipe has placed the order, but Chorus has come back that it's a non-standard install. I've taken a picture outside what I think is the UFB cable (black cable); the grey cable is ethernet coming out of our house. Is anyone able to confirm that the black cable is Fibre?

I think it should be just a matter of connecting the two, and some installation? I don't mind waiting a bit, but up to 90 days (consents) + 1-4 months (installation) without any internet is unacceptable.

I've emailed with Mitchell from BigPipe to have a look as well (still waiting for a reply), but just curious what I should be doing here, and if I'm correct that no ground works and so is required.

Have you checked what is in that black cable? Is it fibre or a two pair copper lead-in?

It's taped, I can't look "inside".

Who installed those cables, what do they say they are (and where do they go)?

I assume the beige/grey cable is CAT-5 network cable. That makes the black cable quite thick.

I think the Fibre lead-in we just had installed was not as thick as network cable (which is why I asked). Can you peel the tape off?

I don't know who installed it. We bought the house when it was finished. As they are tied to the ethernet cable I assume it is Fibre.

Yes, it's cat 5 network cable.
I am not at home right now, I will have a look later. Thanks.

Its possible that black cable is HFC Cable (Vodafone).  Especially since you're in Lower Hutt.

Green Pipe strongly suggests it is a comms cable.

Depending whose pipe it is they maybe able to blow UFB fibre down that as well.

I talked to Vodafone on the phone, and they are more helpful than all the emails I've been pingponging with BigPipe for the last week.
They say it's not a Vodafone cable, but most likely an UFB cable. It came up in their system as well as "consent required", but that's most likely an error at Chorus' side.

Not going very smooth with BigPipe. It's annoying they don't have a phone number...

Totally hear you on this. But I'd say it's a key part of their business model, and one of the reasons why they can offer decent prices (especially without contracts).

Personally, I think I'd think twice going with Bigpipe for a new connection for this very reason; I was totally happy with my move to BigPipe as it was just changing ISPs with an existing fibre connection. The connection went fine, but when I ended up having issues regarding speed (in the end shown to be a problem with the modem, mind you!) I found it really frustrating communicating only via email. It can make to-and-fro "conversations" incredibly  s l o w  to make progress!

Yeah not sure what to do. If I cancel now, I lose the "progress" of last week probably. But I hate that I can't give them a call, and the fact they are not really pro-active.

Just take the tape off. It's the only way you'll ever know what sort of cable it is.

The fact they've run cat5 from there to inside the house would suggest it's just a copper lead-in.
