Hi,

I've had trouble with neighbours messing with my phone and stealing internet data. My query today is - how many identifier numbers should a telecom huawei HG630b router show on a network when there is one desktop connected to the internet. Should it have one or two? Mine shows two devices with the same name, mac number but different identifier numbers. The neighbours stole my instalation CDs from my thomson router and used the thomson name from the back of the hardware.I was using a lot more data than normal and chorus sorted that one and I've been using a new router. I'm wondering if my previous problems have resurfaced as I seem to be using more data again than I expected. I'm not a big user but if they start downloading stuff that is illegal who is going to be held responsible? I'm picking its me.

I'm hoping that the answer is two and I can crawl back under my rock but I'm getting bumped off my wifi a lot, my phone doesn 't connect for an hour or so (when I dial numbers I get a dial tone half way through and it won't call the number dialled) and sometimes my wifi network on my devices is still working after I've turned "my" wifi off. I'm wondering if there could be a bridge in place that they have networked in. I don't know anything about networking but do know my way around using a computer. Thanks

login change the admin password to something non default, then change the WLAN password to something else. then they would have to hack it to get it.

if its something like admin or password then its pretty easy to get in and use your conenction

Andif it is a router that does WPS, make sure to turn that off otherwise someone just needs to press the button to get things back onto the wireless. That had friends confused as to why the kids kept getting back onto the wifi when the passwords were changed.

I would warn your neighbour that stealing someones WiFi without their permission is illegal. And say that the MAC address of his device is stored on your router so you know he was there

Then change the SSID and password and make sure that WPS is turned off as per the previous suggestion. It's a serious crime IMHO as what happened if he downloaded child porn then you could be in a world of pain.

I guess that this could be a serious problem for people, like ourselves, that have unlimited broadband -- how often do we actually look to see how much is being used? Answer: Almost never, at least in my case.

It used to be that Spark did not show broadband usage on unlimited plans, but since the recent upgrade, they now do show this.

Usage for: 14/07/2016 - 13/08/2016

Unlimited

Unlimited remaining

so perhaps we should all check MySpark occasionally jic. Of course, this will jump when OS updates come down, especially if you have a bunch of windows machines as we do.

I have changed the name and password repeatedly. I'm not on unlimited data either. Today I changed the user name on the router and the name on my wifi network. I turned off the wifi on the router and my original wifi name popped up and my phone contected but I'd already changed the name. Then it disappeared a minute later as I was trying to get a photo and I couldn't connect with wifi. When I turned on wifi (with the new details in place) my tablet wouldn't recognise the router but said the network was out of range. Ten minutes later after turning it off and on it connected- weird.

I don't use WPS but if they have a second router bridged in and it has WPS it won't make any difference will it? Hence my original question - should there be two devices (both with same name but different identifier numbers) showing on my network. How do I remove one? When I right click I can't delete it. As you can tell I'm really ignorant on networking - something I need to brush up on.

How do I tell from the router interface whether there is a bridge, or worse if this router is the bridge and they have highjacked my connection? I know this seems a little far fetched but over the last week I've been bumped off way too often, and my phone hasn't worked so something is going on (much like a previous incident earlier in the year).

My last question for today. I have changed the router access name today from admin to another one, but I notice admin is still in the list for "account" under "maintenance" in the router interface. Does this mean it can still be accessed using the admin and corresponding password or will it only recognise the new name and password. Thanks
