old3eyes: Actually I like the black color scheme.

Wasn't really a question of "like" or "dislike" ... more the pointlessness and expense involved.

NonprayingMantis: Interesting point of view considering Telecom have recently been pulling out of international stuff - like selling AAPT.

I have noticed that, butlast time I read they were selling off some international parts so they could move into another.

NonprayingMantis: I also note that none of the other major telcos in NZ have names that tell you what they do either, so presumably you have equal hatred for them too?

Vodafone (this is the closest with 'phone' in the name but 'Voda' is meaningless)

Wasn't really the point. The point was "Telecom NZ" is a perfectly good and senisble name, while changing it toe "Spark" is silly and pointless.

KiwiNZ: Stop being insulting about Telecom/Spark management some may well be members here.

Nothing to do with Telecom's management in particular (other then obvoiusly being the ones making this decision) ... ALL management are brainless idiots who rarely actually know what they're doing or think through their decisions properly. Of course, this is partly due to the fact they often know nothing about the business they are "managing" and simply move from one company to the next chasing a bigger and bigger pay packet - one week their selling shoes, the next cars, the next computers.

I suggest you read again the Forum FUG...

Again, interesting point of view.

Simon Moutter (CEO) joined telecom in 1999 and apart from a few years at auckland airport, has bee there the whole time

Chris Quinn (retail CEO) joined telecom in 1991

Tim miles (geni CEO) has only just joined telecom, but has decades with Vodafone.

Rod snodgrass (CEO digital ventures) has been at telecom over 10 years.

David havercroft, CTO, has been there 5 years, but has extensive telco experience at BT and Cable & Wireless
The CFO, Jolie Hodson, is fairly new but that's it.

So much for your theory I guess

Demeter: The website isn't broken at all. Each comment is simply abbreviated on the front page to a single line but loads in its entirety when you click on it.

Except that before it didn't, looks like they've fixed it now though.

Tim Miles doesn't have "decades with Vodafone" as he was Unisys GM when I was there. He brought Russell to Unisys when he moved To Vodafone and then Russell joined later before he went to Voda UK.

Or it could be that he's just a kinda provocative person. Which is fine, IMHO.

I'm happy with the change - Telecom NZ is changing internally to be a lot more nimble but the problem is that all the changes will be for naught if externally they've got a brand that has a tonne of negative baggage associated with it so it makes sense to rebrand so that the the face of the company resembles what is happening behind the scenes.

As for working at Telecom/Spark, I don't think they have much need for someone who has a Bachelors in Religious Studies and Philosophy unless they need someone to resolve an existential crisis a manager needs help working through.

KiwiNZ: Are you suggesting that no corporation should rebrand ?

If it's pointless and meaningless, which is likely 99% of the time, ... yes.
If it's at tax-payer expensence (like Auckland City Council) ... definitely YES!

"Telecom NZ" is a perfectly good name that tells you what they do. "Spark" is silly and juveniile that makes no sense and achieves nothing useful. Of course, the "Telecom NZ" name probably doesn't sit well with the management dimbulbs and their big greedy ideas for trying to muscle in on telecommunications in various other countries outside of "NZ" (some of which they've already been doing for quite a while).

Another example is Air New Zealand's ugly and pointless new "black" colour scheme.

NonprayingMantis: Again, interesting point of view.

Again, not Telecom NZ management in particular ... management of anywhere in general.

I'm up to my nuts in Telecom shares, so all I can say is "Gods speed Spark".

I'm also hopeful that ShowmeTV content will be so fantastic and of such high quality, and HD, that UFB will be an absolute must for every household, which will mean copper prices will be less important for CNU, which will mean my CNU shares might actually recover somewhat.  It's all about me.

The decision to go into TV really makes me wonder about management and their long term thinking. I mean last year they were still selling the tivo, which would have been the perfect device for delivering their content. Not only via freeview, but via the Caspa system. Instead Quickflix have now got onto the tivo, by replacig caspa. I guess Telecom could get their app on the tivo too, but it would put them in direct competition on that device. They really need to get some business partnership with the manufacturers, like tvnz have done with samsung devices, although the video quality isn't great.
Telecoms customer base is the mum and dad user, who want simplicity. They don't want another set top box, it needs to be built into the TV, and from what I have read, this showmetv will only be initially available if watching on your PC and possibly some tablets. Who wants to watch a movie on a tablet, I certainly don't, and I doubt mum and dad users will either.

They were a minor partner in TiVo. This move make more sense and what many her have been asking for a service that competes.

Me neither. Some commuters on buses and trains do watch video on tablets. You can also plug a tablet into a TV to watch on the "big screen" (although the quality may not be great) which is easier for many people than connecting their computer to the TV.

I don't want to watch video on my computer either ... but then video via a dial-up connection is rather attrocious. :-)

Still a partner though, and would have been a good platform to get their service onto peoples tvs. Instead a company who previously had no association with the tivo has got onto it. Currently I don't think they have announced any plans to get onto peoples tvs, and people don't want to hook up pcs to the tv.  Quickflix has managed to get themselves onto many different devices, and are even on Sony Tvs. I suspect that that makes it more difficult to telecom to get on tvs that already have an arrangement with other providers.
