I'm having ongoing issues with BigTime broadband.
I've purchased a new modem, and had that replaced (perhaps unnecessarily) but issues are on going.
The issue seems to be DNS related.
The modem (Belkin) will connect to ADSL, and connect to "internet" i.e. sign in to telecom.
However, no "internets" is then forthcoming. I get "attempting to resolve" errors, and other unusual behavior.

This morning I've changed the routers DNS to use OpenDNS, and so far it seems to be working, other than having to reload a page once or twice to get it to load.

Is anyone else having issues that seem DNS related? What can I try next?

That's an odd issue to have ... were you using TC DNS when having the issue (if so do you know what addresses)? I would say the issue with using OpenDNS is that the traffic goes out of the country then back in to do simple DNS transactions which would add latency to the request ...

Its a very odd thing to have happen.
If you get a chance and are willing can you set your modem to use the DNS servers given automatically and PM me the following details:

* DNS Server IP's given to your modem
* The current IP your modem was given

The other issues with using external DNS is that you most likely will not be sent to the local CDN for things like google and akamai.

Thanks for your replies.
I've changed my router back to default "Get DNS from ISP" and this seems to be working correctly now.
I'm having other issues that I don't think are ISP related, i.e this morning router was on, wireless was on, machines were connected to wireless but no data forthcoming. Could not log into router either.
Power cycle and all is OK.

Again thanks for replies, I'll continue to monitor the thing...

iTunes downloads now work during peak times, throttled but they don't time out which is great, keep up the good work

Hi Joseph,

No problem at all, didnt do anything to help this time really...
If for some reason DNS stops working for you again please let me know and i will take a look.

Of course if you could include those details i asked for above that would be helpful.

If you have time could you please also PM the IP addresses of the DNS servers you were handed this time around?
I would like to do some investigation just to make sure i havent missed anything.

Youtube hurtles by .... much much better

will see how it goes ... cannot speak to others but I notice a significant difference last nigh

Are these NZ stations, if so they are probably hosted by CityLink and the Telecom - FX interconnection is probably working for your region.

No they they are overseas in the US

How can you find out if the peering is working in your region?

Hey,

As I moaned quite a bit about the changes that were made to the big time plan (and rightly so) I feel it only fair to also let people know that the plan is pretty decent again, in my experience at least.

I don't get line speeds to file sharing sites anymore but really who needs that anyway, if you are going to download files from the likes of rapidshare etc usually it isn't time critical.

I think as it stands right now telecom have done a decent enough job to reach a balance.. although my speed is a fair bit slower tha line speed from these sites it is far better than the 100 kbytes or so I was getting. For the price and considering we are in NZ it seems ok..

If I was in the states or europe or asia of course I'd be horrified but hey... we aren't :)

Thanks to those on the forums from telecom who were brave enough to take part in these forums, stick in there, even though it may seem everyone is against you (and maybe they are) it is still good to at least pop a word in when telecom won't on an official level.. thanks for that.

As I said on the GamePlanet forums...

Once I find the issue behind TVNZs poor performance, I officially have no complaints. BigTime now allows me to do EVERYTHING I once did on the internet on my other plans. VoIP actually seems to work better than last year when I was with Actrix as my ping is significantly lower.

I can play Freelancer on American servers, stream American radio streams, and can download at awesome speeds and torrents work as per ususal. Although I have been needing them less because HTTP is actually performing better.

I put doozy to work on a few suggestions of mine. I am waiting on the results, but I will give it a month or so.

Thumbs up Telecom! Can we keep it this way please?

I don't seem to be having any issues with performance for what works.
It's what doesn't that I don't like.

Websites / services on non-standard ports seem to be blocked/limited something chronic.

Steam takes multiple attempts to connect and log me in (4 retries at last attempt, took around half an hour before it connected), Halo doesn't retrieve a full server list, cPanel/WHM work around half of the time, and I get random timeouts connecting to a handful of Bittorrent trackers.

In addition incoming ports appear to randomly open and close at will. (I do have port forwarding set up properly.)

Yeah, for the past coupla days my connection has been working pretty much as it was before. Don't know about ssh problems if they still exist. If some one has done some sort of testing on ssh - please post your results.

All those servers work perfectly for me

As an aside, the one to LA gave me a 280kb/s upload, and 208kb/s download.

LA is where the Southern Cross cable lands, isn't it?
