Micheal: I'm on Big Time too and the other morning suddenly noticed reduced speeds and the connection kept dropping.

What I discovered was it wasn't a Telecom issue, but my router. I had to factory-default result my router to get everything ticking along again. (Just rebooting the router achieved nothing). I have a Linksys WAG200G. Maybe you want to try factory resetting your router? Worth a shot. Big time is singing along after I did that.

Oh, and my general experience of Big Time has been superb. I've had it about a month, and I consistently get d/l speeds of 12-13Mbit/sec. Youtube streams fine, but I don't watch TVNZ on Demand so don't know about that.

i do not know what has happened in the last few weeks with big time, but world of warcraft is now playable, i can even do 25man raids which were dam near impossible to do, is this the fix telecom has been working on or am i just lucky and will they get me aventually

I am on big time and understand the whole idea behind and have no problem with the throttling of p2p traffic etc but the one thing i have noticed is when i am playing Modern Warfare 2 on Xbox 360 when it gets to around 7-8pm at night my connection drops right down to its unplayable some nights and dosn't come back to usually 11pm or so. It dosn't happen every night but its not an uncommen occurence.

PC: 3.3ghz Core i5-2500, 8gb DDR3, ATI Radeon 5850, 27" QHD IPS Monitor

It does feel like like something has definately changed for the better.

I wonder if they have finally turned on their transparent http caching for everyone, or whether it's just lots of people on holiday = not much contention on the international bandwidth pool.

hmm i do not think it becasue of people on holiday, i have been on this plan for 4 months now, and this improved like 4 weeks ago, also if i use a tunneling service my latency shoots up in game where as without it its fine seems a bit odd, and + people maybe on holiday but as everyone these days they still need what we use in everyday lives one of them being the internet. and also torrenting is still slow, so maybe they did fix the gaming side of it, to be honest i don't see why the shaped gaming trafic is uses way less bandwidth then most things on the internet these days.

Time?

What are your ADSL stats?

Pings to local NZ servers or International?

What servers exactly?

Is your connection shared on multiple devices, or just the one PC?

Ultra high pings are classic symptoms of hitting a shaper somewhere, but can be other things.

A precise example others could try and replicate would help.

well the time was around 11am till around 6pm - it got better then

Pings were to local and international servers
main test was to telecom.co.nz an snap.net.nz

around 4 computers on the network but only 2 were online at the time

Telecom do traffic management from 2pm-11pm......
how about try your ping test after 11?

Also you will need to specify where are you pinging to...local or international etc......

I'd be surprised if that changed much during the day but I'll try and remember to check tomorrow.

The traffic shaping on BigTime could be anytime remember, Telecom reserve the right to manage any traffic, any time. Typically it has been between 9am and 2am though for most of the management.

But again, and I know it sounds like a broken record, if consistent fast performance is really important to you, there are better plans for you than BigTime.

If on the other hand, you want the ability to download heaps and pay a pittance, then wahoo, it's for you.

If you want great performance (for all your important games and apps at times that suit you), and you also want flat rate downloads, then I'm afraid there's probably not going to be a plan from any ISP that completely satisfies you anytime soon.

Oh, genuinely national traffic that doesn't go outside of NZ (from a Telecom NZ routing point of view) shouldn't be affected by the traffic shapers.

i mite consider moving to a real country with real internet. :) because in all honesty 1000ms pings at 11am in the morning on a Saturday is utter crap i dont want to wait 20s for a page to start loading if i wanted this i could use dialup. bigtime is not just for the heavy downloads its good for big families like mine, using youtube etc alot facebook games images videos 20GB doesnt cut it.

Fair comment about 20GB perhaps getting all used up by a large family...

However at this stage we don't know if it's even the fault of Bigtime...

It could be a local DSLAM issue (Did I see that your ADSL connection was only at ADSL1 speeds?)... That could mean you are on an older DSLAM which may not have the same backhaul for example.

It could be a fault affecting customers from multiple ISPs and it could be a fault affecting all Telecom customers (regardless of plan) in a given geographic area.

It also could certainly be funkiness in the BigTime shaping - that's definitely a possibility.

Finally it could also be issues with the servers you are pinging, or with their ISPs.

Do you have some server names or ip addresses for the International sites you mentioned? I'll try them tomorrow on both lines here and report back. At least then we might be able to narrow down where the problem is occurring.
