surfisup1000: [Also, why on earth did telecom not say earlier that they are only rolling out to chorus? They must have known this.

They did quite some time ago.

I now this is a Chorus not Telecom question, but how are the UFB areas decided?

Unless you have a link where this is stated I am skeptical.

*EDIT*

Telecom released this 1 year ago...

"Telecom announced today it has signed a wholesale services agreement with Ultrafast Fibre Ltd (UFF) to deliver fibre-based services to the central North Island region."

This is pretty much along the lines of what I understood so there was no reason to expect Tauranga to be excluded from the initial rollout.

I've had fibre ready to go for 6 months now, and there are no quality large scale providers yet (not counting orcon as from what I have become to understand is that they are certainly not providing a reliable service).

There is 1 local provider that might be OK but their prices are high and they are a small operation.

Well just found this on the updated Telecom Site -

http://www.telecom.co.nz/business/ourproducts/broadband/businessbroadband/ultrafibrebroadband/ & http://www.telecom.co.nz/internet/ultrabroadband/pricing/

Fibre does not currently support Static IP or Port 25 unblocking commonly used for such things as hosting your own website or email server, remote security web cameras, remote access to server content like email or files.

So that is a major deal breaker for 99% of businesses and schools wanting to move to UFB under Telecom...

Perhaps this is designed as a hook to compel these sorts of customers to upgrade to P2P fibre (rather than GPON)?

EDIT: Snap, beaten by the posts above.

Plenty of businesses still rely on a Static IP address so this is something to be aware of. This appears to be a Telecom limitation as other ISPs do offer Static IP addresses, so hopefully they will be able to offer a solution soon.

Is DDNS not a way around this?

Both static ip and port 25 unblock will come in when throttle comes in. I should know as I am building the backend stack. There are a number of reasons why we didn't launch with it day one but believe me its being worked on and will be released once it is ready for primetime. There is a huge shift with UFB on the backend and it takes time to ensure everything is working as expected and scales to our total customer base. Watch this space but I won't comment as to when it is due to launch. But those that sign up will be given notice before it is turned on.

There are a couple more details on the site now:

- Overage is $1/GB on the 50 GB plan and $0.50/GB on the other two plans
- The copper line will be disconnected once Telecom offers voice over fibre

Telecom said during the conference call (it's in my notes in previous post) that they are running trials with three other fibre providers.

So you can wait, or go with other provider. Up to you.

Having a wholesale agreement and being able to deliver a service are two things entirely. I could probably write a 2000 word post explaining why, but quite frankly don't have time to explain the many parts to delivering an internet service and the differences in terms of provisioning, handover, monitoring and diagnostics between Chorus and the LFCs.

Telecom have also committed to using the voice ports on the ONT which also opens up many more technical issues, some of which I can't post in a public forum, but it's safe to say the changes from XML to TR-069 provisioning for these and inconsistancies between different brands of ONT is a roadblock for some at present.
