Yep certainly is Steve, something we are acutely aware of and have pointed out to the LFC's, do not expect an equivalency of service off the ONT ports and not something we will be considering as frankly there is a lot of issues between Service Provider softswitches and the capabilities of the different ONT's. so I would expect the only companies to use these will be ones that have no other option or haven't discovered the problems yet or actually don't care as a dial tone is good enough.

freitasm:
surfisup1000: "Telecom announced today it has signed a wholesale services agreement with Ultrafast Fibre Ltd (UFF) to deliver fibre-based services to the central North Island region."

This is pretty much along the lines of what I understood so there was no reason to expect Tauranga to be excluded from the initial rollout.

Telecom said during the conference call (it's in my notes in previous post) that they are running trials with three other fibre providers.

So you can wait, or go with other provider. Up to you.

I'm aware of this, it has been frequently mentioned.

I was investigating other ISP's in tauranga ---Orcon were on my list, but , I then read this GZ thread...

"Forums › Orcon, iServe and Kordia › International Traffic issues on Orcon at moment?"

18 pages of complaints about slow connections since Feb 2013??? Really!!!

The only other credible provider is EOL but their prices are high -- EOL's 100/50 500gb including phone costs $219 as opposed to $159 at telecom.

So, while I 'could' connect to UFB, in reality the options are limited unless I want to get locked into high prices or poor service for a 12 months.

My best option appears to be Snap VDSL -- I'm looking into that now.

Having a wholesale agreement and being able to deliver a service are two things entirely. I could probably write a 2000 word post explaining why, but quite frankly don't have time to explain the many parts to delivering an internet service and the differences in terms of provisioning, handover, monitoring and diagnostics between Chorus and the LFCs.

Will there be any performance differences because of way this has been structured?

ie, would a customer connected to chorus receive a higher quality connection than someone connected to Ultrafast fibre for example.

Personally, I thought it would have been more efficient if chorus simply did the nationwide rollout. New Zealand is not such a big country to require a patchwork of LFC's.

underwatervrg: Well just found this on the updated Telecom Site -

http://www.telecom.co.nz/business/ourproducts/broadband/businessbroadband/ultrafibrebroadband/ & http://www.telecom.co.nz/internet/ultrabroadband/pricing/

Fibre does not currently support Static IP or Port 25 unblocking commonly used for such things as hosting your own website or email server, remote security web cameras, remote access to server content like email or files.

So that is a major deal breaker for 99% of businesses and schools wanting to move to UFB under Telecom...

Perhaps this is designed as a hook to compel these sorts of customers to upgrade to P2P fibre (rather than GPON)?

Both static ip and port 25 unblock will come in when throttle comes in. I should know as I am building the backend stack. There are a number of reasons why we didn't launch with it day one but believe me its being worked on and will be released once it is ready for primetime. There is a huge shift with UFB on the backend and it takes time to ensure everything is working as expected and scales to our total customer base. Watch this space but I won't comment as to when it is due to launch. But those that sign up will be given notice before it is turned on.

This is good to hear. The port 25 block is frustrating and inane, as it stops customers using anyone else's SMTP servers. We have clients contact us who have been using SMTP on port 25 to our servers fine (not many use non-SSL but still a few for their own reasons), then suddenly one day it stops. It appears some Telecom ranges have port 25 blocked, others don't.

Thanks for the explanation Peter - understandable with uncapped connections - no-one wants fibre connections saturated if people are unwittingly part of a spam botnet

Anyway - shouldn't everyone be using ports 465 or 587 by now?

My understanding the block is the default for every connection. If you want to use port 25 you fill in the form online and they will remove it for you.

I'm thinking that this $95 is quite a good deal.  Bearing in mind Orcon's 60GB fiber cost $89, this Telecom deal comes with a copper line which saves us rewiring the phones with ATAa althou I guess I lose voicemail, caller ID which we've never used anyway and we have our own answering machine.  And similar to Telstraclear's ADSL2+ plan which is $82 isn't it for 60GB or so but many people might be paying $3/month more for the wiring maintenance fee which is optional but provides some protection.

I would like to point out that where I live (Miramar Wellington) I have both no VDSL2 coverage (about 600 meters outside the coverage area) and there is no sign anywhere for UFB apart from in Seatoun in 2016 (however I don't live there).  So I hope the irony that I am building the main subscriber management stack for Telecom yet won't benefit from it for many years unless I move is not lost on the geekzoners here.

<chortle>... If only.  SMTP Port 25 inbound & outbound blocking has for some time and will continue that way as a default service.  For those that need a Static IP as they want to host services at their address and Port 25 unblocked as they want to run their own mail server they will be allocated a Static IP and have Port 25 unblocked.  That however will be the exception rather than the rule.  How it's priced and offered up as a service is outside my control, but the technology behind it will be offered up as part of the total service.

Damn, that sucks.

Have you at least got a Master Splitter installed to make sure you're getting the best possible speeds on ADSL2+?

Bahahahahah of course I do.... It was the first thing I put in when I joined Telecom and moved from TelstraClear cable back to ADSL.  Attenuation of ~29db and have a connect rate of 14.8Mb.. So I can live with that.

Had signed up to go to one of the new plans and then I found out about that when I called to check. Have had to postpone going to UFB now until I can keep my static IP Address :-( what a big disappointment. They also could not give me a date of when it will be available.

This was my understanding - however it's not the case. We have clients on Telecom connections who have had no issue for years, then suddenly can't send via port 25 one day. Others have been moved to alternative ports due to being blocked, then a new computer is purchased, the default port isn't changed and port 25 works again.

As said earlier - it's hit-and-miss.

Telecom have also committed to using the voice ports on the ONT which also opens up many more technical issues, some of which I can't post in a public forum, but it's safe to say the changes from XML to TR-069 provisioning for these and inconsistancies between different brands of ONT is a roadblock for some at present.

Chorus is using 1 model of Alcatel ONT, Ultrafast Broadband is using one model of Huawei ONT.
I'm not really seeing why a couple of ONTs (and Telecom is only offering Chorus UFB ATM) prevents a rollout.

Heck, Telecom is probably using Alcatel gear as for the backend anyway. (one vendor).

How does provisioning the Chorus ONT work? Presumably the ONT downloads a config from Chorus?
