zena1919: Is this Greek zone or a telecom New Zealand internal blog?

It's Geekzone (not Greek Zone). And we're lucky we have Telecom folks answering things here (and helping when people have problems). We're lucky we have folks from 2degrees, Flip, Kordia, Orcon, Skinny, Slingshot, Snap, Vodafone, WorldxChange and many others around here to answer questions and help.

If you are rude to all these people helping thousands of users, then it's time to rethink your participation here.

mcraenz: Zena, there's nothing more to say on the topic. You feel that that you're not getting good value for you $99. Understood. Let's move on. :)
good advice I have moved on.

mentalinc: Charging the $99 install/checkup fee sounds fair.

But what happens with the splitter already installed that is being checked?
Does it get removed and a new one put in place?

Happy to pay $99 less cost of splitter which is say $10-15 at the bulk price I assume Chorus buy them at...

Edit:
Does this also mean "cowboys" like coffeebaron are out of a job now since Chours will charge the fee regardless?

I have the same issue. I have a new ETP which I paid $160 for and a 1m cat 6 cable to the modem........ What am I paying for?

Once again I'll repeat what I keep repeating like a stuck record. The $99 fee doesn't cover wiring and nobody has ever claimed it does.

The $99 is an installation fee, which one could hypothetically goes part way to subsidising the $230ish cost of the modems Telecom are supplying.

Come on man. I sell DSL modems. $99 represents a profit on their cost of these. RRP is not cost. Other RSPs are supplying modems free and installing for free. Certainly they are subsidising the Chorus visit but so will others.

I still want to know what sort of quality telepermited VDSL2 modems I can buy for $99 and still be making a profit. I'll happily put in an order for a couple of hundred as an initial order at that price.

Me too... Feel free to post publicly who you work for zena1919 and you can email me pl at telecom.co.nz with some prices of a decent VDSL modem for sub $100.  I'll pass those details onto our product teams as I am sure they would be interested as such a beast doesn't exist from the ones I have seen.

Awwww I was hoping he would be honest about who he worked for and some commercials about wholesale prices of VDSL modems rather than just being a troll.....

I thought I would be original and try to stick to the topic of this thread ;-)

I just completed my online order, and looking forward to getting a decent upgrade in both upload and download speed.

I would like to thank michaelmurfy for helping with the line check, he and NealR must be putting in the hours with having to deal with both work and keeping geekzone users happy!

If anyone is interested I can post back my experiences from an apartment upgrade viewpoint.  I might also try and capture some pics of the 'comms' room and the work done, plus before and after line stats.

Word from the wise. Make sure you get all the keys to all possible wiring cabinets from your building manager (one for your apartment, one for the floor you live on and one for the basement) before the Chorus tech turns up and inspect all the rooms to make sure the keys work and you can see patch frames. Really helps out the tech and makes the installation much smoother.

OMG! I am sorry!  Even worse for the fact I used to work there and know NealR.  Can I ask what department you are in?  I worked in one of the BI teams, in Group Finance.  We did some work with the Fibre/VDSL project team for their reporting requirements, such as SPOT codes, etc.

Cheers for that :) And don't worry about Neil (or Sara as we're calling him now to avoid all confusion) since there's 2 I contact all the time at work and always seem to get confused :P

Like Pete said, make sure you've got all the access - nothing worse than not having a key and having to rebook the chorus guy, seen it happen before and it doesn't seem fun :)

Thanks for the heads up.  I have checked out the wiring in the apartment and can see it comes in and straight into the alarm (which is not even turned on) then off to the phone socket in the kitchen (where I have the phone and modem with external splitter) then off to another FOUR jackpoints.  Probably why I get such crap attenuation even though all the cabling is CAT5.

There is no wiring panel in the apartment, and I have been told where the building comms room is and will get the keys on the day and was going to check it all out.  I might just check that out earlier.  I just remembered there is also a floor 'comms' room that has all the power meters and the Sky+TV cabling, alarm cabling, fire alarms etc, so I will get that key to, but I didn't see any patch panels last time I looked.

Perhaps Grandstream are moving into the VDSL modem market :)

so back on topic,  I personally am a huge tzatziki fan. I love it as a side dish with my Moussaka, followed up by some delicious Baklava.  What about you guys?

Here you go, found one for under $100NZ - we could offer this to our customers but I don't think they'll like it too much :)

Looks good to me, and cheap too! Does it come with a free backdoor for the Chinese government?
Probably loaded up with "top quality" Fuhjyyu capacitors too.
Heatsink? What's that? Copper? Oh, you mean the lump of copper enclosed in plastic to look strangely like a real IC? Tongue Out

Ah, I shouldn't be so mean. The thing probably does work. At least for a couple of months anyway.
