I was on orcons equipment yes, but according to my adsl modem it is saying i have an adsl2+ connection now that im on telecom also but their sync speed is 3000kilobits lower than on orcons equipment.
Im using a broadcom based modem which are meant to be the best for telecoms equipment too..
I'll write them an email and ask why I get better sync speeds from orcon. and see what they say :)
its not the end of the world but I guess I would have expected the speeds to be the same... or even possibly better with telecom.

Tel69: I'm not adsl2+ as yet and my sync speed is around the 8000-9000 kbs.
I spoke with the telecom guys today who are doing the cabinets around here and going by what they said it pretty much comes down to distance from the exchange. (Unless you just have a bad port)

Within 2km roughly you can expect to be around the 8000 kbs until the adsl2+ cabinetisation is done.
I know someone who lives right beside their exchange (literally) and he's getting 11,000 kbs sync speed. (semi rural area)
Don't know why orcon gave you such a good connection, but could you be on one of the unbundled loops that 3rd parties have installed their own equiptment in?

If you are on a Telecom (or resold Telecom UBS) line, then your max for ADSL1 should be 7616kbps. If you are seeing 8000-9000 sync then it's an ADSL2+ line.

There's a heap of reasons why speeds could change between Orcon LLU and Telecom. Different equipment, different chipsets in the equipment, the DSLAMs might be in different places, there could have been different interleaving settings etc.

Although it's less likely to be an issue in the case above (since it was the CO end changing), the biggest factor affecting sync speeds is often home wiring or conditions.

Home wiring isn't an issue in my case as obviously that wouldn't explain a 3k drop from orcons equipment to telecoms, plus I know for a fact the wiring in this house couldnt be better, have a main splitter and top quality cable direct to the adsl modem.

Anyway, ill try another modem , maybe their speedtouch to see if I get a better sync but from memory broadcom chipsets were the best for telecom anyway (what is the speedtouch chipset).

My modem does indeed report adsl2+ for the connection, and it reported that when I was connecting at 3000-4000 kbs when I was on Go Large. Thats one of the strange things with big time vs go large.
Both unlimited download speed, but on Go Large I was connection at close to or just over 4000 kbs all the time and then the day I moved over to Big time it pretty much doubled yet both were reporting an adsl2+ modulation. (Things that make you go hmmmmmm) :)

The Chorus guy I was talking to today was pretty much "the less of this old type cable before you hit the exchange/cabinet the better". Thats a given, but I say roll on the cabinets, it's 4 houses away from me. LOL!

I've just changed from the Orcon LLU plan to Telecom's Big Time plan also. My modem currently sync's at 7270 kbps / 755 kbps with a line attenuation of 55.0 db / 29.9 db and a noise margin of 6.2 db / 8.9 db.

These figures are actually worse than what I used to sync at on older ADSL and I noticed the change after the cabinets in my area were upgraded. I am assuming that because my copper currently terminates with Orcon's equipment in the exchange rather than at the cabinet that my sync rate (and thus data throughput) has been affected by the cabinet upgrade.

Looking forward to what the Telecom connection can provide.

if you are on the big plan from telecom then you are already on telecoms equipment, another person with a lower sync on telecom equipment...

I'm in a flat of 5 with usage ranging from moderate to downloading the entire internet.

Currently on Adventure we get ~1.5MB/s for most things. Hopefully this will be a better alternative to going over the cap....

I left the change so late in the month in case we do notice a significant difference and want to change back.

Ive noticed speeds to RS and MU are definitely managed no matter what time of day, its 3am now and max download speed from those sites is about 150kbytes. On orcon could get 1200kilobytes from those sites.. but can't expect everything for the much lower price though might head back to orcon eventually :)

I was contacted by the Dominion Post they are running a story on Monday in the NZInfoTech section and wanted my opinion of the Big Time plan, the girl said they had contacted a few people from geekzone for comments about Telecom's new plan.

Looks like a few of us will have our ugly mugs in the paper waxing on about broadband. My only fear is how badly I will end up being misquoted :-) As I remember Mauricio always complaining about being misquoted - or could I have misquoted him myself.

I'm still getting really good speeds, I mostly do youtube and web browsing.

Telecom got back to me about my sync speed being slower than on orcon. They said that they have their connections setup less aggressively than orcon as they prefer to go for a slower sync speed and lower noise ratio which means a more stable connection but lower speed.

Did you mention about sites that host files are being "managed" pretty severely? :)

At certain point Telecom will contact Go Large users and ask them to move to a more suitable plan.

I don't think Telecom will shut down Go Large because of the price difference. If you heard this from a CSR then it's probably not reliable information.

Unless Go Large gets upgraded to at least fullspeed (both up and down) ADSL or ADSL2+ (which I doubt will ever happen) then I'll probably switch to Big Time anyway because the 128kbps upload limit is horrible.

But I would still like to know if we'll have to change or not, and I know some people who are happy with Go Large and don't want to switch because of the price increase
