darkspearxz: While you're on the topic of Albany, any word on plans for east Auckland (Howick, Botany)? I'm quite happy that I do get 1 bar of LTE signal up here though on high ground to play with anyway. :P

How about some love for smaller towns, in particular Nelson. :)  The whole town could be covered with 4-5 sites. Any ideas when we may start seeing expansion out of the main centres? After using it in Wellington yesterday 3G now feels so slow.

I'm personally living in an area with no LTE or DC and it seems LTE is everywhere in between heh (Wellington). But as Nelson is my home town I know there's a bit more than 4-5 sites there to upgrade ;) This will be on the list to upgrade soon I'd say.

michaelmurfy: Agreed - Vodafone and that other provider I can't be bothered naming just ain't good in Nelson.

Yes, not worth jumping ship just for a bit of 4G in town when I can't even get decent reception at home which is only 5mins from CBD.

Swemoph: Where abouts in botany do you get signal? I've been walking around the area from my house for the last day. I'll drive somewhere tomorrow if I cant find it near here.

East Tamaki Heights, on Point View Dr (rural section), I had 1 bar, and on Highland Park near Howick Intermediate I've been getting 2/3 bars. Pretty happy given that LTE never kicked on for me on Vodafone in this area, but definitely room for improvement, most of Pakuranga Rd still has nothing.

Edit: Just checked the coverage map, and it shows that we don't have DC here either, so guys from Nelson I guess we're even :D

yggdrasil: I went to Noel Leeming, and when they looked it up, they told me I had got a 'Vodafone model'. Shortly after, the Telecom tech called me back to say that because it was not a "Telecom sourced device" they could not help me. Period. She gave me the number of a Samsung support line (looks like an overseas number) and that was it.

All devices are not created equal. There is customisation that goes into phone firmware to ensure that the device is fully compatible with the network that it's being used on. One other such example is fast dormancy - use a phone with this enabled on a network that doesn't support it and you'll find your battery life suffers significantly.

This is the very reason why models are sold in stores normally with very clear branding. If you buy a phone for one network and use it on another there is no guarantee that everything will work fine - this isn't anything new, it's been the case for 10+ years. The one exception to this is Apple where a lot more of the settings are controlled from the carrier pack which can easily updated easier.

Operator testing of firmware is something that is *very* important. The consequences of this can be degradation of a network for all users, something that's happened on a couple of occasions where Apple have deployed iOS updates that have had a major impact on network resources due to changes to the signaling.

Not clear enough, Someone I know asked for a telecom s4 at Harvey Norman and got a 2degrees one. The boxes arent labled and she had no idea until I checked *#1234#

Harvey Norman stock both and the 2degrees one is $50 more expensive. Sounds like they have very poor internal inventory systems. Did they take it back for a refund?

They've had it for months and didnt notice until the other day

Try using the official Ookla Speedtest app instead and selecting the Telecom AKL server.

Can anybody recommend an android speed test app that doesn't chew through 50-100 Mb per test? I don't want to kill my whole months allowance on tests :-/

Problem is that to get an accurate reading it needs a few seconds to build up and maintain peek speed - and at these speeds you could be going through upwards of 15MB/s.  So while I am sure much lower use ones exist, I would question their accuracy.

I share your pain but there's nothing we can realistically do about it sorry.

I have engaged with the speedtest.net people as part of the project to roll out servers in Akl, Wlg, Chch recently and we asked for bounding conditions on the data use per test - especially for mobile. Unfortunately the amount of traffic you have observed is what they told us is needed for mobile tests at higher speeds. The actual amount of data used changes with the speed of the access and isn't deterministic.

There were murmurings about zero rating the speedtest sites but I'm afraid that's a low priority at the moment - there are plenty of far more interesting bits of work our limited resources are doing!

Unfortunately, as mentioned above as well - we only really trust the results from our three speedtest servers, that's because we are in complete control of the end to end traffic path and can be confident that there are no congestion issues that we're unaware of.

The short story is that I'm afraid the best and most accurate results will be achieved by using the relatively heavy (data wise) tests from speedtest.net on the Telecom Akl, Wlg, Chc servers.

Cheers - N

What you REALLY want is a larger data allowance ;-)

Yes I see that when I use ookla. I really just want to compare different locations, but I guess any app will need a reasonable sample size to register a peak and mean value.

Well, it's not an HTC One, but I'm using a Galaxy S4 with a custom (well standardish) i9505G ROM and sure enough, there's a bug that prevents LTE being picked up on the particular ROM I'm using. I had to download an App from the Play Store to force LTE on. (And then it worked great)

Cheers - N

Can you advise what app you are using to do this? I have the same setup but no 4G.

Cheers, Tim
