You'll need to save the new rom and matching google apps to the memory card.

Reboot phone into recovery (you should now have this option when you hold the power button)
select 'apply update' to get into androidiani
wipe cache
wipe user data
wipe dalvik cahce
apply update > select new rom, wait for load
apply update > select new gapps, wait for load
return to top menu
select 'baseband'
select thai.zip
return to top menu
reboot

Done.

Take under 5 minutes once you have the files in the right place.

[Disclaimer: This is from memory so not 100% accurate, I'm sure. Also, this is from my own experience and I only started messing with this a fortnight ago so I don't claim to be a pro, just sharing my experiences]

Back to my results with the different roms, on ice and fire rom which is based on CM7 which is based on 2.3, I chewed the battery in about 14 hours. On CM6 / 2.2 I've been getting around 20 hours.

I use my phone pretty heavily including 3g hotspot for up to 80 minutes a day so I can surf on another device. I'm sure with either or any Rom that better results would be possible with research and tinkering, but I've not really got to that yet.

Good job on the update :)

I've been running a leaked Moto 2.2.1 rom on my milestone for ages. 2.2.1 + setcpu to overclock pretty much doubled my battery life, and made everything a lot snapier.

I'm tempted to try a cyanogen rom oneday, but everything works pretty well at the moment, and I can't be arsed setting it all up again. Will have to jump into it sometime though.

Where do you get the leaked 2.2.1? Is it a 'legit' rom that was leaked?

What sort of battery life afre you getting and what parameters do you use for setcpu?

I got the rom from the XDA forum ages ago. It's a leak of the Official Telus 2.2.1 as a nandroid backup.

I have setcpu set to 250-800mhz with conservative scalling. With light usage I can get around 24 hours, with average usage its more like 18-20. I have pretty poor signal at home which doesn't help either. On stock I was lucky to get 12-15 hours.

i think there is official milestone 2.2 (froyo) for UK/US only via MSU update
but to do this u must flash your phone to UK version using RSD lite

1-Download and install RSD lite
2-Download UK sbf from XDA http://and-developers.com/sbf:milestone
3-Back using titanium back up or open recovery (application only)
4-reboot phone into recovery mod (i don't know how to do that i don't have milestone i got xt720)
5-connect usb flash UK 2.1 rom
6-follow the instruction on http://www.motorola.com/staticfiles/Support/GB-EN/froyo/milestonenotification.htm for optional manual upgrade

as i said i don't own a milestone so i held no responsibility if your brick your phone although i think thats highly unlikely
but i would suggest you to find out if official froyo come with new kernal or not if it is still 2.6.29 then there isn't much point to upgrade bcoz swap kernal is not support and it won't boost your phone much. Even if you download adobe flash from market it would be really slow make you want to turn it off and uninstall it straight away (in my case :p) the other thing you get is app2sd so you can install more apps (you can simply do the samething in eclair 2.1 just look link2sd on market and create an ext3 partition on ur sd card)

forget to mention this will void your warranty bcoz u will need to root ur phone, but you can always flash nz new sbf before you send it off to repair

I am using the cyanogenmod for android 2.3.3
And i skipped backing up the baseband so i lost 850mhz capability until i found the thai files which got it going again.

Problems I have
- Phone freezes while using it.
    Turning it on and off by presing the power button twice then unlocking it will allow me to continue what i was doing.

- Google maps and directions will crash often
   I have been unable to tell if this is something to do with the shaking in my car as it doesnt happen as often now. I ended up ripping out the magnets from my window mount to see if the vibration was activing the magnetic switch in the back of the phone as i was driving but it didnt fix it. Annoying when im following a map and out of cellphone range as it cant re query the google server for the route info when i relaunch the app.

- Gallery crashes
    I have a feeling that the gallery app is much more graphically intensive with its visual effects and that is too much for the phone to handle. Just have to relaunch it often.

- Camera app feels crap
   Looks like it was designed for windows 3.11 but as i understand at the latest cyanogenmod release they were still working out some issues with the camera.

Battery saving ideas
Does anyone have any tips for changing the overclock modes to save battery power? I dont mind underclocking. I suspect the options allow me to set a minimum mode, and have it speedstep when it needs to. But i havent fiddled with these settings yet as i didnt want to screw the phone.

Disable Magnetic Switches
Also does anyone know how to disable the magnetic switches or remap the keys. I dont want the OS recieving their signals as it turns on the screen. All the apps i can find just act as an alternative program and will open then close instantly, but the screen still gets turned on.

I do really like the cyanogenmod 7. Simply because i can install apps to sd card.
It works mostly well and i can do all the rooted stuff.

OK - truly strange.

I have gone to 2.2 instead of 2.3 (want to play around with overclocking, and to see if it's more stable and better perfroming than 2.3) and the keybvoard has gone wonky (the physical one).

All the "Alt" keys on the top row are out of whack - Alt W comes up as 1 instead of 2, and Alt Y is % instead of 6, for example.

And - it can make calls but not receive them (calls go straight to voicemail).

Any ideas?

Pain in the behind. I have given it up as a lost cause and gone back (up?) to 2.3.

Hopefully there will be a reliable means of overclocking a 2.3 Milestone soon - the current (for 2.2 only, it appears) method doesn't seem to keep the settings when restarting the mobile.

You are quite correct! The default has the max CPU set at 900MHZ. Which, I assume, means that if required it will effectively overclock to 900MHZ?
