I contacted Telecom about how far I was to the exchange and they told me I was 916 metres away. Will I get a good connection speed from the exchange.

I normally get it a good connection speed with Vodafone but since I've switched over to Telecom (12th October is when I've connected with Big Time).

Yeah I wouldn't take that as granted.
I like you am about at that distance, i can walk to the exchange at the end of the road.
I have a crap connection for my distance, house wiring is not an issue for me also, as I even have a line filter with new cable going straight to the modem. Unfortunately in some areas the copper I guess is just crappola in the ground. cabinets for my area aren't due until late 2010 and because Im already close to the exchange I am unsure if they would even move me to one etc.

I talked to telecom support, well emailed them about my speed and distance to the exchange.. and got a shocker of an email back, suggesting that I am getting excellent speeds for my adsl1 connection.

Errrrmmmm excuse me... but I am on adsl2....

I didn't bother replying, tech support like that really let companies down, when you supply them with a load of technical info plus your line number for the broadband and your account number etc and they come back with some complete wrong newbie answer...happened with orcon at times also.

Someone needs to compile a list of dreadful tech responses from these companies, could be quite amusing :)

johnrutter: Hey guys,

I have a question about the free router Telecom provides with the broadband plan:

Thomson TG585 Wireless Multi-User ADSL2+ Modem.

Is a decent router or should I purchase a different router?

Could you give me some recommendations of a router under $200?

I've not had the displeasure of using one yet, but I've tried to help a mate who got one.
Painful was the word.

I bought myself a d-link wireless, and it works OK. There are still a few gotchas with it.
Why did I buy D-Link and not linksys or Cisco?
Price was the major factor for me at the time.
The big up I have with buying the d-link is I don't have to wait for Telecom to put out their versions of firmware fixes. Theres nothing Telecom in my router.

If you are going to buy a router, find a good model, then get a good price by looking it up on Pricespy.
DO NOT just go to dick smith and buy it, even if it's on special.
I personally like 3com, but you don't get to see alot of their stuff.
If I was buying today I'd probably go for a Dynalink NB6Plus4W ADSL2+ or a Linksys WAG160N but you might have unique needs.

3coms lower end stuff is a bit shoddy imo... I use to have to deal with a lot of it.

I think a Zyxel is about the cheapest, best alternative to something like a cisco. Linksys are also pretty good.

of course you can use the ip extension mode (half bridge) in the thompson modem/router and then run it through to a dedicated router, like an AP running tomato or dd-wrt.. or even to an old pc running smoothwall (the ultimate in reliable connections) though most don't want to run a pc just to handle the internet :)

I wish that were true, I came from Orcon+ network and when I moved to the telecom network, my sync rate dropped by 4megabits, quite a drop.
Different equipment in the exchange, I expected it to be the same or even better with telecom.. was a little disappointed but anyway it isn't really an issue as most can't download on the plan at their sync speed now anyway :).

There is the different equiptment that adds to the equation.
4kbits? You sure you don't mean 4mbits.
Reality is you don't really know, down here unbundling in our area has not started (yet) so it was all through Telecom equiptment.

Yeah, I went from 4mbit on Go large, to 12mbit (Change to Big Time and using ADSL2+), then 17 mbit (cabnitisation), now I can't seem to get over 14mbit sync speed. Telecom say Big Time users get a certain percentage of the total bandwidth, however I'm quietly wondering if they help restrict that usage but cutting the sync speeds on Big Time ports as more people in an area go to it. (Well not so quietly now. ;) )

My current connection with Vodafone if I use SpeedNet can range from 4 - 6mb/s.
I reckon thats kind of the same speeds people normally get at the moment. During the day, my speed connection is excellent from 9am - 9pm but if I was using the internet late, it suddenly slows downs to about 2mb/s (which I found suprising)

But this is going to be different from Telecom since my connection speed will be down during the day and at night (11pm), I probably will be expecting faster speeds.

What speed have you guys been getting with Telecom Big Time Plan from both peak and off peak times?

macman2256: I have been using Telecom "Big Time" since Day 1, and it was rubbish for a few days, then it went pretty fast like 500kbps all the time. Now its like 0.3mbits at the most to anything international no matter what time of day, even 3am. Im finding at 11pm its unusable, it drops, times out, pings are like 1000ms internationally. Telecom are absolute rubbish. They say its optimized for everyone. What they have done is made it dial up for everyone. Also they say they don't throttle Local Traffic, but they must do, even with a local download its impossible to get over 200kbps. Some times downloads start at 200kbps and the speed steadily drops to 13kbps. I rang them and they say its fine, Come ON telecom, this is slower than slingshots 256/128k plan. Also I find torrents are faster than HTTP downloads. I thought they are trying to stop piracy, so why are torrents faster than legal downloads? this is just plain BullS**T TELECOM

And this is ment to be/become ADSL+2 for every one A big "LOL" at that... Wait isint ADSL2 ment to be even faster than normal ADSL? Hmmmmmm HHHMMMMMMMM I cant see how there going to supply this unless they do a massive upgrade or maybe MAYBE its already updated but they cripple it by design.

But really its just like every other large corporation in the world there for ever cutting back on out going expense ie "The cache" and charging more for less product. cant believe this would actually happen to ISP's
