This is not true. The technology exists to reverse an upgrade.

That's good to know; I live on the edge of the CDMA coverage area so might not quite be in WCDMA coverage. I wouldn't want to get "trapped" with a WCDMA phone if it doesn't work!

Hahaha, surely they will make you check back every 5 mins to see if they have released any info.

I'm sure the plans will be unremarkable... but we can always hope.

They've done a good job of building up expectation at least amongst us types (geeks).

I just hope the launch of this network is something game changing, but I'm pretty sure you will find that it ends up just being a much needed upgrade for Telecoms existing customers (this may be you) and mean not a lot for anyone on Vodafone.

For anyone on Vodafone that doesn't live and work in a CBD and wants mobile data, then it probably _does_ mean a lot to them, as from experience so far, Telecoms EVDO devices are faster and more reliable than Vodafone's 3G ones, and that's with the CDMA network, presumably the WCDMA network will be better still.

Coverage sounds like a given, the other ingredients are the devices, the plans, and the support. For various reasons I've had a lot of dealings with Telecom over the past few months and have been impressed every time, it remains to be seen what devices they get and what the plans are like. And obviously, what ongoing support for these new/updated components is like.

If nothing else, it means more competition for Vodafone so they might up their game a bit and improve their lacklustre customer service (although JohnR is an outstanding exception! :)

For those of us whom ARE in a CBD and always drop to GPRS due to the poor 2100 building penetrations, no 900MHz CBD upgrades and the fact Vodafone removed the "UMTS ONLY" option from the handsets, XT will be a revolution.

Agreed, JohnR is one of those few remaining "Good guys" from BellSouth days.

Shhhhh.... I'm trying to under hype myself so I'm pleasantly surprise when the plans come out. ;)

Exactly my thought. For me it all boils down to what's on offer on launch day.

So we all have to wait till 630 on May 13 to hear of the plans and then buy a phone? I understand how they have a launch time to sell the phones, but it would be nice to be able to research a bit about the different phones before purchasing. Oh, and when I go into a shop, it would be nice to test it out (like all important texting) on a real phone and not a fake one.

Surely they can release the info and just have a launch time to sell them???

9 out of 10 kiwis don't know about the new network. So this time it will be a marketing failure for telecom. I haven't seen many xt network ads around. But anyway, I will be one of the early adoptor, I will be there the first day to get a sim. Vodafone 3g works outside my work place, not inside the office. Still useless unless they improve signal. Make sure telecom will have a huge ads campaign this time, after launch.

the ads in the nz herald are garnering lots of interest. many of the staff at work, including many non technological educated women, have been asking me things like, "ive seen those new ads and just been reading about in the nz herald (full page ads), i know you're into your phones, can you explain to me more about it" and of course, away i go explaining about the upcoming network etc.

the marketing is a success i believe, because if middle aged women who arent that technically capable can start asking questions.. then something's working..

the ad's are being broadcast constantly in prime time viewing and are stoking interest from young and old.
