Generally they won't do it in store for liability reasons, they can and will send your phone to Telegistics if you're unable/unwilling to do the update yourself :)

That's not what the New Lynn store told my wife when she bought hers. They said to take it to the store and they would do it. If the store won't do because of liability reason what chance is there for the non geeky out there if they screw their's up in the process. Void the warranty I guess..
akia: The update is that we're in the middle of testing 2.3.3 and have found an issue. We're waiting for a new release of the software before we can retest. No ETA at this stage but once we do have ETA on a release we will let you know.
If the issue is the shortened battery life that should have been flagged by the experience of others worldwide, no NZ testing required.
That is not the issue. We test to ensure that all services we offer on XT work with the new release.
While I won't have warranty on my 9000T any longer, there is no problem running 2.3.4 on the phone - have been running it for about a month now
joff_nz: But have you tried every possible scenario that any non-geek telecom customer might come across? And are you willing to stake your brand on it?
Because that is the test that telecom has to pass.
I am a professional load and performance tester, so it has been tested pretty thoroughly. The most pressing concern was making sure that the 3G radio upgraded correctly. Once the APN's are all set there don't seem to be any services that do not work - mind you, as much as I am happy with the telecom network, I am happier to have a non-telecom crufted android rom. The first day I got the phone it was upgraded to 2.2, and then 2 days later when I was satisfied that I had found the correct 2.3.4 ROM I upgraded to that (http://www.samfirmware.com/firmwares.htm) - these are leaked official samsung ROMs and upgrading is very easy.
joff_nz: Yeah I'm not against it, I may be getting a SGS in the next few days and if I do it will also be going straight to 2.3 whether it's official or not.
But you and me and most people here are more technical than your average SGS user, and so any update needs to be reliable to all users.
Absolutely...I make my living performance testing large complex systems so I am more nerdier than most. One of the reasons to select an Android phone over an iPhone IMHO is because you have the flexibility to put custom ROM's onto it. Incidentally, if you are going to upgrade you SGS to 2.3.4 then look for the I9000XXJVQ version and do some googling on the upgrade process. I absolutely understand that Telecom need to test that all their services need to work, I am a tester - and to be honest it is not just telecom that drag their feet on getting the latest ROMS out. It is annoying for the customer though that we are essentially waiting for the OS to be branded by the telco as well as having services of dubious value to be bolted on (not just telecom remember). Meanwhile, I am enjoying a clean install and an over 20% performance boost over the stock telecom 2.1 ROM.
