This query is deliberately not posted in the Android forum, as I am expecting a Telecom response to it.

Why don't Telecom branded Samsung I9000T get Froyo (Android 2.2) update whereas almost every other carrier in the world has provided it, even VFNZ? There are many known issues with the stock ROM, mainly around performance. There are many users of SGS I9000T who would not like to take a plunge into installing a custom ROM or do a Kies registry hack for various reasons (warranty, comfort level, knoweledge etc.). There are rumours that Telecom would go straight for Gingerbread (Android 2.3), but they are still rumours.

As far as I know, SGS I9000(T) are one of the best selling Android phones (else there wouldn't be dedicated forums, groups just for one phone).

ORT team, your views please!

I have the same phone and I am too eagerly waiting for this, as are a couple of friends with the same phone. C'mon Telecom. any indication of time?

You've already mentioned about going down the custom rom/kies hack route, but once you stop relying on slow telcos to push out updates that don't even have an ETA, it is so much nicer. At least overseas carriers for example notify customers that an update will be coming. As far as you know so far it will never be updated, whereas users of custom roms are even on Android 2.3.4 in some cases, and at least 2.2 if they choose to flash generic samsung kies updates.

You have to literally have the device brick and be totally unusable for it not to be possible to flash it back to factory settings before sending it for warranty. At least this is the case for the majority of manufacturers.

I know this isn't the kind of response you're after, but It's definitely worth considering if you get no joy...

While I don't have an i9000t, I do have the cheapy i5503t which I just updated through Kies. The 2.2 download showed it as being for TNZ so surely there would be the same update available for your phone?

There was no need for a registry hack or any modification for the update to be installed.

The other problem is that if your 900T is under warranty any back door upgrade that goes wrong becomes your problem. I suspect my wife will not allow me to back door update her one..

@exDee: Yes there are many options for custom ROM, and could be thne route I take, if there is no response from Telecom. I agree that it is difficult to brick a phone by loading a custom ROM, will Telecom honour the warranty if let's say there is any problem with phone.

@Oldhat: i5503 has been updated tp 2.2 by telecom but not i9000T. Have checked many times in Kies (when Kies connects !).

hmm...i asked a telecom rep about this and was told to speak to samsung because it's up to them. even when i asked about froyo, which has been out for a while now, the rep still said i must ask samsung as it's their handset.

users from the vodafone nz forums are reporting a new update being offered through kies - where's ours :()

The I5503T 2.2 update for NZ only just came out a few weeks ago.

I doubt that Samsung would issue updates without involving Telecom. Maybe they're having trouble finding a tester that will go backwards :-D

We're working through with Samsung but we have no updates yet as to when we can expect to see this released.

Additional to this we're working very hard to try to skip the 2.2 update and to update straight to 2.3.

Thank you very much for the update and it is good to know that telecom is working hard to go straight to 2.3. But I have to wonder, why does it take so long and so much work before it can be released. Surely there is not a lot of extra work involved to make the release suitable for telecom NZ customers compared with other providers? At the end of the day, they essentually are the same phone but customised for the host provider. Samsung have already done the bulk of the work by releasing the basic update. Not intending to be critical but curious as to why the frustrating delay.

Unfortunately they broke the compass in the 2.2 update :(
Is it Telecom's responsibility to fix this or Samsung's?
