Hey ppl,

On Big Time and for the most part enjoying it, but have a question, Does the traffic management extend to National traffic?

Not in my experience.

Pretty sure the traffic management is done in / at the edge of Global Gateway International network, not the domestic part of the network.

Note that some "local" traffic is not actually local traffic and comes from US servers/mirrors because not every content provider interconnects with Telecom (or Telstra who interconnect with Telecom) and Telecom don't peer at APE/WIX.  The classic example is Citylink who host stuff like TVNZ on demand.

ArranH: Gmail is timing out for me, which is something I haven't experienced since I left Vodafone :(

The issue with https for regular web/email usage ie: Gmail is pretty annoying.

Seems like a classic case of a rule to stop the really heavy downloads tearing it up with https downloads negatively affecting everyone who's just trying to read their email via the gmail website.

Yeah and even GMail via IMAP is over SSL so that is very slow too. I often get timeouts when connecting to GMail over IMAP.

In my experience, local traffic is shaped. But not all of it. I can still get 1MB/s from Australia if I download the right mirror of, say...a game demo or patch.

By national traffic I'm refering to traffic associated to sites and servers hosted in ICONZ and Orcon's local Datacentre's. I know that other sites even though using NZ domains can be hosted overseas.

Any data center worth it's salt in NZ has multiple transit providers and interconnects directly with either Telecom or Telstraclear (remember Telstraclear and Telecom have an interconnect agreement).

I believe ICONZ are interconnected directly with Telecom at the the big data center in the sky tower, not sure about Orcon but I'm sure it's similar.

Huh, Australia isn't local traffic.

Download the 350MB test file from here, pretty sure it won't be shaped

You could also try other speedtests hosted in NZ:

http://www.nzdsl.co.nz/
http://www.xnet.co.nz/speedtest/
etc

Sorry, let me re-phrase what I was trying to say.

A lot of the stuff I have tried to download locally goes very slow. I tried to download Ad Aware from an Actrix server and it was dog slow. However, when I downloaded the Call of Duty 1.6 patch from an Australian server, I got a meg a second.

Telecom said ALL traffic is shaped, so I am guessing that means national too. But there are certain servers over-seas even from the states that don't seem to be effected by the shaping servers.

Could it be that we are talking about locally cached content here? More and more content is being locally cached by Xtra...
