khull: Those around the block long enough will remember familiar history repeating itself:

Jetstream (post 1999), Go Large (2006), Big Time (~2009)  - all died a horrible death within months of introduction

Bait. Switch.

If there is one thing Telecom is good at is they have a powerful arsenal of Saatchi & Saatchi marketing folk behind them. And they do a damn good job and you can bet there are dollar signs crossed over their eyes with the yet another rebrand and logo change. Part of the reason I turned down the industry even having a major in marketing degree. Yes, more money in IT :)
It was jetstart, not jetstream that was the unlimited (128kbit) plan.. I've been around longer than that. Characterising it as Bait and Switch is utterly unfair. None of those plans started out with the intent of discontinuing them.

Cheers- N

Thanks for the correction - but message is the same to point events in time. Don't get me wrong, any sustainable business will need to maintain the bottom line and drive revenue growth and Telecom/Spark is doing just that that. The very fact this thread exists and the Telecom branding is front page on many news and search engines is a huge success from marketing generating exposure right from the get go.

Let us do a checkpoint 12-18 months time and see where unlimited fibre will be in the playing field. I along with many others would like to see the execution done right this time. 4th time lucky.

In their defence the main reason go large and big time were pulled was because of regulatory BS that doesn't exist anymore.
So maybe this time it will be different....

I am sticking with my tried & tested 500Gb plan for now

Will wait and see how the 'unlimited' plans turnout

For one thing, I rarely use over 200Gb/month so unlimited in not required (would have preferred a 250-300Gb tier)

However, It occurs to me; what is there to stop Telecom/Spark adopting traffic management on ALL existing plans ? I suspect they covered that in the contract fineprint.

fyi - My "Unlimited" TiVo broadband package has started to be metered! ;(

No communication advising this has come from Telecom, my month has just rolled over and metering has started...

Other TiVo owners should check...

timmmay: Details of their traffic management.

Short version - downloads (torrents, P2P, maybe file downloads) are slowed if the network is busy to ensure interactive services like skype and such work properly. When the network isn't busy everything goes full speed. Seems pretty reasonable in theory.

I don't want to sound like Mr Negativity but wasn't that what 'big time' was supposed to do? wasn't that meant to have traffic shaping?

As for the video - I shuddered so hard I think I pulled a muscle :-(

BLATANT PLUG: Snap do unlimited between 1am and 7am for anyone with a data pack - and we won't traffic manage a thing. :-)

Just FYI, Mauricio doesn't look too kindly on ISP staff posting stuff like that in other ISPs threads.

^ agree!
back when I was a snap customer, their unlimited is TRUE unlimited - any port/packet shaping/ traffic management is transparent if any. Just that work now pays for internet so I had to move off
