I've had a VDSL connection with Spark for 12 months now. On the day it was hooked up we managed to get 15Mbps down and 5Mbps up, which (as I understand it) just meets the minimum speeds to be considered VDSL. This was fine with me (upload speed is more important than download in our house).

Over the past couple of months I've noticed that the download sync speed has increased to about 21Mbps (which is great), but the upload sync has decreased (not good). I was only getting an upstream sync of about 1Mbps yesterday (i.e. no better than ADSL). I called Spark, they reset the port (I think?), I rebooted the modem, and now my stats are as follows:

While the upload sync has increased, it's still only half of what I had last year.

Before I call Spark back and look to escalate this, is it even worth trying? I understand that we are borderline for VDSL availability anyway, and from what I've read on GZ it seems like Chorus has changed something for a lot of people's VDSL that increases download speeds but may have affected uploads?

Other info:

  • Modem is a Fritz 7390
  • Speedtest results are in line with what I would expect at the sync speeds I am getting
  • Location is north-west Christchurch
  • Fibre isn't available yet

Edit:

Forgot to note:

  • Professional install 12 months ago with a single master filter and single cable run directly to the modem jack point
  • Only one outlet socket in the house (for the modem), no other devices plugged in anywhere
  • No changes in network configuration in the past 12 months

Yes, you can read all about the change to the 998 bandplan here:

For the vast majority of people it results in good improvement to downstream sync, and in many cases upstream sync too (though not as much as downstream - and mainly just because they removed the artificial 10 mbps upstream limit)

Unfortunately for a few borderline connections it can have a negative impact on your upstream... and unfortunately there's nothing you or they can or will do about it.

You have a borderline connection what will be in the small % that got worse, not better from the 997 to 998 bandplan change. Realistically nothing you can do to change this or make it better.
