what speed does Telecom cap you at when you run out of gigs?

edit: on Total Home packages, not mobile or anything.

64k upstream and downstream. It is quoted as reduced to dialup, that is to make it understandable by the masses.

damnit, so you can't even get video streaming speeds (100k) in good areas or anything?

the only times I've gone over the cap it seemed like it still went around 300k (late evening), but it was only for a few hours, not days on end.

edit: oh wait, by 64k, you mean 6.4k in terms of download speed (56k modem 5.6k max download), eh?

Yes 64k in terms of dialup speed of 56k. From memory, dialup is max in NZ of 53.6k and typically 48k to 52k. As upstream is 33.6k the 64k/64k is better. But as most websites are much BIGGER by a big margin these days, just do one thing at a time.

hey, is there no way to buy an extra gig? looks like I'd have to process a request for a new plan to switch from speed cap to pay-by-excessive-gig payment (which is pointless, because they're already upgrading me to 120gigs in 2 days ... I just need to not run out yet)

Just change plan online to the next one up, you can change that back next calendar month to minimise the extra plan cost. $10 or $20 extra, thats for a month, if you changed back in 2 weeks, just half that extra cost.

if that was an option for me I'd have done it 3 weeks ago to get the 120gig upgrade

additionally, it would make more sense to temporarily change to a cheaper plan (since I'd only need a few days worth of bandwidth), which on the whole would be a saving.

shame they don't just have some simple 'top up' system like for cellphones.

Yes I had the frustration of being on a 10GB Telecom plan over the summer when I was working out of town. The plan was managed by someone else so I couldn't change the plan. I tried ringing up and buying more data but the only option was to upgrade the plan.

Couldn't throw money at them.

I'm ok now though, I survived. I'm back home on my unlimited slingshot plan.

When you change plans on Telecom usage is set to zero, so yes you can change to a smaller plan no problem.

You pay pro rata amount for the time you were on each plan irrelevant of data usage, so if change say 33% through the month you pay 33% of the price of the original plan and 66% of the price of the plan you changed too.
