Hi,

I'm having a problem getting a Panasonic KX-FC175AL to detect a ringing signal when it is attached to a Philips SBX 6. I don't think its an issue with the REN, the rating on the device is 1.

Why won't the fax detect the ring signal? Making calls out with it is fine, and other Faxes/MFCs attached to the PBX work flawlessly. What can I do to get this going??

Maybe the fax is looking for its ringing signal on a different pin than the standard pins 2 + 5 of a BT plug.

Remember the old (non 2-wire) jackpoints used to produce a ringing signal on pin 3 (or was it 4?).

This was a real pain as it meant that most of the old Telecom phones wouldn't ring when plugged into a PABX without using a jackpoint in between. We had this problem when using a Panasonic PABX and had to put jackpoints on all extensions which used a Telecom phone whereas cheap phones I brought back from Hong Kong were fine without the jackpoint.

Maybe that's what you will have to do i.e.

SBX6 ==> Jackpoint ==> Fax

Somebody who is more familiar with the SBX6 will no doubt have further comments to make.

Thanks Grant,

But unfortunately its not a matter of connection pins. After a bit more research into the SBX6, I've found that it doesn't generate the 80v required (In the correct waveform) for the Fax to detect a ring. A suggestion has been made to me to put a capacitor across the line and see if that makes a difference. I'll give it a shot.

It would probably be easier just to chuck the SBX6 and upgrade....

This is what a master socket does - have a capacitor to generate the ring signal for devices that require it. Have you tried the fax with one? The new 2 wire sockets are slightly different to the old master + extension sockets.

I was just going to write my success story - but you have pretty much summed it up in your post! I connected an old Telecoms termination box to the PABX and then connected an extension jack to that. The Telecoms box has a couple of capacitors in it and a small resistor. Seems to be working fine now :-)
