Hi All,

I've recently moved to Northcote, N-Shore Auckland and all I can say about Telecom so far is ABYSMAL!!!

My line syncs at around approximately 20Mbps, however.... most of the day the link is down and the Internet doesn't work.

I've tried all 5 phone points in the house, differnet filters and I am now on adsl modem number 3 - same problem.

I find that the line speed does vary, one minute its maximum attainable rate is 21500mbps... then its down to around 18400mbps...

Thoughts anyone? On the odd day it works fine without issue.

Is it possible you have an unfiltered alarm grabbing the line?

You should really get a master filter installed if you have 5 phone jacks to isolate the internal wiring from the DSL line/socket.

Basically the only way to tell if it's your internal wiring or the external wiring between your house and the exchange/cabinet is to isolate the line where it comes into the house before any internal phone wiring and test there.

If you're not comfortable with DIY's that kind of thing, log a fault with Telecom and book a tech to come out. You will need to go through basic trouble shooting first though I'm afraid with the CSR on the phone probably.

No idea - we only moved in here just after Christmas.

We're waiting on the landlord to get the surrounds sorted by a groundsman so that we can actually look around the properly. It is a relatively new property, 10-15 years old and the phone cabling runs underground as opposed to above ground.

The original owner did apparently try and install an alarm but never finished it.

I have no idea if a master filter was installed, given what I have said above, is this something that Telecom/Chorus can sort?

Your ISP should be able to assist with getting a master filter installed.

IF the alarm is grabbing the kine to repeatedly dial out you will end up with a connection that is always going up and down.

If you have a master filter, then only one of the jacks will work for ADSL. Coffeebaron would be a good person to contact to get one installed, as it completely isolates all the house internal wiring.

A master filter is essential if you want the best ADSL2+ connection. It's also mandatory if you have an alarm fitted that has been connected to a phoneline.

Your ISP can organise this for you but it will cost $199 for Chorus to come and install it.

Blaming Telecom is jumping the gun and I bet the issue is not Telecom, You should be checking out the house wiring making sure a master filter is installed and 5 phone jack points will not be helping at all

Thanks for all of the replies. I'd say its probably the internal wiring. Its pretty pathetic though that houses don't have comms standards. Firms such as Telecom should be pushing for higher standards. It seems every nz house we live in has such issues. This will be our third rental in 21 months where we've had to get a Telecom or chorus engineer to come out.

Hard luck I know.

Fortunately these sorts of issues will become a thing of the past as people move to UFB. Bear in mind that the existing network was never built for data so there was no reason to get it "right" in the old days (and daisy-chaining sockets wasn't considered "wrong" because there was no reason not to!)

VDSL is not being deployed because (as Steve posted in another topic) it requires a master filter, it uses a more expensive modem, and needs the wiring to be in good to perfect conditions. All these would add a $500 cost to installation.

Do you think home owners are up to spend $500 to make their houses good enough for broadband?

I saw this thread last night, and was going to reply but then saw others already saying "look at wiring" and "check master filter is installed" so decided to stay away. But reality is that home owners have no idea those things impact broadband performance, and instead rather go around saying to friends, coworkers stuff like "I got into a new house and now have [any ISP here] and they are appaling" when in fact they should first get things fixed inside the house.

We have so many topics of "I have terrible speeds" that end up being "I have been using Speedtest to a Belgium server, testing over WiFi, on a house with no master filter and ten phones jacks. I didn't know this could impact speed..." that is beyond a joke now.

My suggestion? Contact CoffeeBaron (Fraser) here on Geekzone and get him to install filter, redo the wiring and then see how it goes.

I assume you're a Telecom customer, feel free to email me pl at telecom.co.nz and I will do a line lookup.  Been quite insanely busy the last 12 days or so... But things are quietening down finally.

As per everyone else's response (I'm looking at you JohnR/BiddleCorp!) a Master Filter will most likely be required.  Since you're in a rental then you will probably need the ok from the landlord to make the change.

Normally they are ok with it.  But you should probably get the approval.

There are guidelines that have been in place since 1998 when Telecom first published a PTC standard for home structured wiring. This has been updated numerous times over the years and formed the bases of the TCF Premises Wiring guidelines.

The problem however is that they are nothing but guidelines, and the average electrician completely ignore them. Unfortunately there is also still a problem when building a house if the average person is told it'll be $600 worth of parts for a fully structued cabling solution vs $50 for a few BT jackpoints they opt for the BT jackpoints.

I agee that internal wiring should form part of the building code, but I suspect that'll never happen..

Yep, the guidelines are often ignored. Back in late 2007, I moved into a brand new apartment in Wellington. This was the Telecom Demarc:

Imagine my surprise when our ADSL used to cut out constantly...

That has so made my day today Adam... :) You can't complain too much, they had even left documentation in the form of the post-it note attached to one of the cables.  Brilliant.
