Hi All,

I have a very strange situation with my new Bigpipe VDSL, and is a bit of a Saga.

Plan - Bigpipe Turbo VDSL
Modem 1 (now gone) - TP Link TD-W9980
Modem 2 - Draytek Vigor 130

Started with a connection made to Chorus, then a master splitter installed with a jackpoint for VDSL. Chorus modem would sync when jimmied up to the outside junction box where the line comes in, Chorus leaves (understandably as it worked with this test).

I set up and installed the TP Link TD-WR9980, but it would not sync, so chorus came on Tuesday to test. Initially their modem (I think a Huawei or something, I didn't check) would not sync in the house, so a line filter was installed, and a new twisted pair from the junction about 1m into the house. Nothing would sync still, but after some time trying different things, we could get their modem to sync but not the Tp Link. not a problem - TP Link modem went back to PB Tech, and was replaced with a Draytek Vigor 130, which DID sync (finally).

Draytek not wireless and doesn't have switch etc, so I got a new wireless router to go with it (N56U Asus).

The modem was synced, turned it off as part of the process of setting up the router, and on start up it will no longer sync. I have been through all the settings, checked, rechecked, factory reset, checked rechecked, ignored for hours to see if it would resync but nada, it's gone. I have tried every different socket in the house with different combinations of usual suspects for wireline (Plasma TV, halogen light transformers, microwave, etc) turned off and nothing.

I live in Parnell (middle of St Georges Bay Road) and don't know where the cabinet/exchange is. When the modem DID sync it only synced at 7Mbps down and 5Mbps up. I suspect horrid attenuation but in a muppet moment didn't note the figures on first sync.

I'm hoping someone can help me narrow it down -

1) Am I close enough (or am I too close perhaps) to the cabinet/exchange I can't find in parnell for VDSL?
2) Is there something else that could cause it (ie the connection was on such a knife edge the DLM has changed something and made it stop syncing)
3) Am I living on top of an Indian Burial Ground and the modem is least of my worries?

Chorus should have installed a dedicated jackpoint for your VDSL so testing on other jacks wont give you any insight.

If its working from outside the house, then its obviously an internal issue - but if its a new jackpoint etc, it should be fine. Did Chorus install a new jackpoint or did they use an existing one ?

if chorus was contracted to install a master filter they should be installing a dedicated jack point and not leaving till you have a stable connection.

i believe it should be their responsibility to come back and get it working. So sontact who ever you did to organise the install and insist its not working and you need them back to get it working

It sounds as this is the wrong jackpoint or some internal wiring problem.

If Chorus was supposed to install a master filter then only one jackpoint should be used for the modem. If this was requested but not done then OP needs to contact ISP and ISP will have to demand Chorus to fix it.

Chorus don't install a master filter or jack for Bigpipe VDSL2 - Bigpipe don't want to pay the extra monthly fee for this so it's not done.

In most cases, this is true, but not always. We treat it on a case by case basis. Many places don't need it, so it's pointless wasting the money.

In this case, I don't know the specifics, but since the OP said: "Started with a connection made to Chorus, then a master splitter installed with a jackpoint for VDSL." it sounds like this is the case

To the OP, if I'm understanding your problem correctly, it almost sounds like you had a dedicated jack for VDSL installed (possibly incorrectly), but then when chorus came to fix it, they didn't realise this was the case and tried plugging your modem into other jack points. Does that sound right?

In any case, drop our support team a message if you haven't already and we can help walk you through some troubleshooting and, if necessary get chorus out again.

Just to clarify a couple of points:

When I stated socket I meant multiple power points not jacks, trying to isolate any sort of noise/interference from electrical wiring in the house (although as its a rental I can't check actually what circuits are linked together. Seems legit as a cause of interference and poor connections anyhow (it works like that in audio and at this point anything was worth a try).

I haven't re-logged the fault with Bigpipe yet as I want to try to see if it's not something I can fix, it would be the second tech call. The guy from Bigpipe called to ask me about it as they noticed no sync too which was a nice touch, so if there's no joy i'll just opt back to ADSL.

Chorus initially installed the master filter and a dedicated jack point that was tested for sync.

I logged a fault with Bigpipe as my modem wouldn't sync (TD-W9980)

Chorus returned to rectify fault, replaced the wire between the dedicated VDSL socket and the box outside, including installing a master filter. This would still not produce a sync initially inside the house, but after some time it did with their modem. Mine still wouldn't so it looked like there is two issues - bad line and potentially modem quality.

We discovered a very strange phenomenon, where plugged into the same socket, and different power, the modem WOULD sync readily if it was outside the house on a long RJ-11 cable but as soon as put inside the house it wouldn't go suggesting interference. Same modem, same cable. Bloody odd.

In the end we could get a sync on the normal RJ11 cable, with their modem that provided 7MBPS down, 5MBPS up and a ping of about 4, I didn't note the signal/noise or attenuation. I purchased a (supposedly) better modem than I had which when installed readily provided DSL sync at that point in time, and the problem appeared to be fixed.

The Draytek (which I unfortunately can't provide sync stats on because it wont sync now - I should have written them down first time) had sync until I turned it off last night to connect to a new router/wireless AP, and when turned back on it would not sync again, comes up 0 down/0 up, and has been sitting all night doing this, and I presume all day (not having been home to babysit it), although the call I received from Bigpipe just now suggests it hasn't sync'd again.

have been through all the normal tech support things, and am trying to eliminate the weird in mute hope it's not the wire down the driveway or something, which would doom it to always be poor...

Based on that, and with such poor sync rates the most logical conclusion now is that there is nothing wrong with your wiring, but that you're too far from the cabinet/exchange and the other modems are refusing to train at that distance.

I'd wondered that - i'd swung to wiring as Bigpipe sees a theoretical 20mbps with 3 attenuation down based on their software (or whatever they use to estimate, maybe a Chorus thing) - even taking any forecasting/modelling tool with a grain or several of salt.

My flat is right in the middle of a 20mbps< zone in the Chorus coverage map so can't be far from the exchange or cabinet, I just don't know exactly where it is.

EDIT - not that I don't believe it could be distance of course - just putting forwards why I had swung that way

then there is either an issue with the street wiring or the house wiring as 315m should be seeing 30+mbps with good wiring

Going to get the tech again - turns out upstairs is VDSL not ADSL as thought, and is achieving 16/8 (so within cooey of what it should) - so that narrows it down somewhat i think (everything else is replaced and/or unhooked now).

Hope springs eternal I suppose.

16/8 is very slow for 300 or metres though. I have a 65/10 connection at work at about the same distance, 8 dB attenuation (4 dB on adsl).
