I've been using 222 for voice mail - but I notice that I'm being charged separately for that number - rather than using the minutes I have on my monthly combo.

Should I be using a different number for voice mail?

you should try this..

http://www.touchvoicemail.com/

uses internet to check vm and great interface and manage your voicemails. It has a free version which you cant change the default greeting but happy with that.. or pay a little amount to have customised greetings.

Yep, this is a matter that's come up a few times here on GZ; for the cheaper plans at least, most (all?) telcos charge separately for voice mail, ie don't allow these calls to be covered by a plan's phone call minutes (I do recall that some of the higher cost plans with one of the companies does provide for use of minutes for this purpose).

I remember there was indeed a way to get around this for 2 Degrees and (I think) Vodafone, and this worked perfectly when I was with 2 Degrees. However, I recall trying this when I moved across to Skinny and the same method didn't work, so yes as far as I know you're stuck paying additionally for accessing your voice mail. Total rip, I reckon...

My solution to this is that I've elected to turn off the message service, and left a message that asks callers to call back later or send a text.

Free voice-mail is only available on Skinny's $49 Ultimate Combo.

Can you get into your voicemail by calling your own number and when it answers press * or # ?

I know you can do that trick on VF's voicemail system

As I mentioned earlier, this trick doesn't work with Skinny (or it didn't a few months back - doubt things have changed).

That trick doesn't (or didn't) work with Spark either last time I checked.

Prepay plans on most networks I think charge to access voicemail. 2Degrees Prepay Carryover Combos however will use carryover minutes for voicemail.

Keep calm, and carry on posting.

Voicemail is included in our $46 Ultimate Combo, but otherwise there is a charge of 18c.

The rates are explained here http://www.skinny.co.nz/combos/rates/

As previously mentioned you can set voicemail so that callers hear your message but can't leave one.
