I cannot access some websites due to DNS issues. In particular, I cannot access webmail.stanford.edu

If I try to ping the website I get:
ping: cannot resolve webmail.stanford.edu: Unknown host

The DNS servers in my Huawei HG630b status are: 122.56.237.1 and 210.55.111.1

I have tried reseting the Huawei with no success. I can access the website using Vodafone 4G.

Likely related to a known issue under active investigation at the moment. In the meantime you could  switch to Google DNS (8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4) although it is worth checking back regularly and switching back to our DNS when it's all healthy as the response times for a local DNS vs one in Australia is significantly better.

BTW... I just replicated your issue. I also can't get webmail.stanford.edu (or even stanford.edu) and both work fine from google DNS.

I've logged a fault with the helpdesk myself, but that shouldn't stop anyone else doing the same if they are experiencing issues with other sites.

Cheers _ N

It's slow and fast using the same DNS?

Definite improvement here on Google DNS.

I would be very interested in getting other examples of sites that don't work in terms of failed DNS resolution using the Spark BBA DNS servers (210.55.111.1 and 122.56.237.1). Please feel free to post them here.

We have people looking into it at the moment and can see that there is an issue with the stanford address, but that doesn't necessarily look like it would affect other sites. More examples will give our technical people more to look at.

Post away!

Cheers - N

PANiCnz: I'm having issues with http://openelec.tv/ and http://forum.kodi.tv/

It appears that the Spark DNS successfully resolves both of those. If you are having issues with them then please report through the normal helpdesk channels. I'm specifically trying to gather more info about a potential DNS server issue here.

[Edit: For what it's worth I am getting terrible performance on those sites as well on Spark, but they are loading. I doubly encourage you to log a fault please..]

Thanks for replying...

I'm assuming this is the same issue NZNOG were discussing? Their opinion was there was a load balancer in front of the Spark DNS servers and it looked like one of the pool of resolvers had an issue.

So reproducing the issue could be difficult - as everyone's requests are going to the same place, but going to potentially different servers behind a load balancer.

Son couldn't get to http://gamasutra.com/ whatever that is. It isn't a problem using Google DNS.

Thanks - I can replicate with this website as well.

If this got logged with the helpdesk by people that can't access it, it would be good.

Cheers - N
