I imagine I was one of the first PN residents to sign up a few weeks back; delayed the connection until Wednesday this week to time it with my previous ISP's billing cycle, and the transfer went perfectly. Checking my emails at 6am on Wed morning and my internet died; wondered why for a moment, but after a eureka moment made the adjustments in the router and was back up and running in minutes, so cheers for the smooth transition. The information you guys provide on your website is excellent - not something that can be said about 2Talk, and their disastrous client interface (got the phone sorted out in the end!).

The problem I'm now trying to resolve with the help of Big Pipe is some significant speed issues - only getting 18-50 down (on a 100/20 connection); clearly something with the router, given the results I get directly from the ONT are more like 95/19. Is this speed issue common with Fritzboxes (a 7390 in this case)? Here's hoping we can sort it without needing to buy a new router...

Probably worth a factory reset on the Fritzbox if you havent already.

But I imagine if you have been working through the issue with Bigpipe you have probably already done that.

I can't wait to get connected, just Chorus haven't given my street the "go live" just yet, despite finishing the ground work late Jan (all work done, "streets ahead" signs gone). Shouldn't be long now hopefully!

That's one of the "delights" of a solely email-based help desk (the biggest concern I had in moving to Bigpipe) - resolving this stuff takes time! I send an email first thing in the morning; get a response that morning after I get to work, so can't act on it and reply until the evening... resolving these kinds of issues is going to take time!

Usually the first thing that they say on their support page is to reset the router and make sure it has the latest firmware installed.

Do snap use VLAN tagging? I thought they did. Bigpipe dont (unless you specailly requested it).

Have you disabled that?

You've shown yourself what the problem there is. If you get full speed direct to the ONT, but slower speeds through your router, it's your router limiting you. Also 95Mbps sounds like the link between your computer and the ONT is 100Mbps rather than 1000Mbps.

It's up to you to provide the router. If the one you're using is not up to snuff it's also up to you to provide one that can handle the full speed (if it bothers you that much). There may be a setting on it somewhere you can tweak (disable QoS, ensure it's not limiting the connection speed, for example). Otherwise, look to get a new one. :)

It says:

HINT: LAN ports 2,3 and 4 are configured to use 100 Mbps by default, so if your computers Ethernet port has 1000 Mbps (1 Gbps) forced as its only connection speed you will see no link light.

Have you got your internet connection into port one?

The implication in the article I mention implies you can enable gigabit connection on the other ports somehow if you need to.

Sorry - dont know much about the Fritzbox.

But the OP mentions Snap - so what sort of connection speed did you get with that - what was the plan speed v router speed?

Yep, 2degrees use VLAN tagging, and I disabled this at the point of switch-over.

Of course, I'm also getting these slow speeds over wireless, but am doing all the testing via Ethernet to ensure wireless is taken out of the equation.

My laptop's Ethernet is only 10/100, so that makes sense re limited speed between ONT and laptop. I'd have thought this means that it wouldn't matter which LAN port the router's connected to (ie, whether that port is 100 or gigabit-enabled), given the limiting factor here will be the laptop. Again, I'll check this when I get home to see if there's a difference (I can also try the Mac Mini which has gigabit Ethernet).

I know there are others successfully using Fritzboxes on Bigpipe, so I doubt the router is fundamentally flawed for this purpose; yep, I'll buy a new router if need be, but want to be sure it's not something that's able to be fixed.

I was only the entry-level 30/10 plan with 2Degrees (hence the key reason for my move - faster internet for a lower cost), and that has been fairly consistently at delivering very close to 30/10 whether it be wired or wirelessly.

Will do the reset and firmware upgrade when I get home and report back then; hopefully by then I'll also have had a response from @BigPipeNZ to last night's email!

This only means the sync speed of the port is gigabit. It does not mean that the CPU is fast enough to handle a gigabit.

In my experience you need a 7490 to handle fibre properly. But anyway do the firmware update and see if it helps.

Given you have a working connection attaining very usable speeds (18-50Mbps), getting full speed to the ONT, the issue is definitely somewhere in your router or computer. So it's quite likely we classified or re-classified this query as non-urgent (I haven't checked - just speculating).

Well, the reply from BigPipe's come though, and essentially it's: try the new firmware; then try someone else's router... but I'll do a reset as well, as I never know what vestiges of crud are left over.

In regards to recommended routers for use with BigPipe fibre - I see they mention a TP Link Archer C2, which sells for not much more than $100, and that has wireless AC and 4xgigabit ports, plus a USB port for a printer (which we need) - is that a good enough modem for my purposes? Wireless range doesn't have to be fantastic on it, as the Fritzbox only serves half the house and has crud wireless range anyway. I'm not too keen on having to fork out over $200 for one of the Asus models that seems to get many recommendations on here! Ta...

C2 is probably the cheapest router than can run run 200/200.

Yep it's good. Probably wouldn't use it for Gigatown. but it's definitely sweet for 200/200

Great - given our current (new) plan is only 100/20, I think it should be fine, and give us some headroom should we ever move to 200/200 or similar. It'll bring the benefit of AC as well, which the Fritzbox doesn't have. I'll give it a go at sorting out the Fritzbox first, but this'll provide an affordable substitute should I not succeed. Thanks for everyone's help.
