Can someone please explain this to me?

It appears that the existing services will be moved away on the 20/5/16. Once they're gone, we'll submit an order to get you connected. It does look like this means that you will be without service for a few days until the order is completed.

So, we all sit around waiting for the disconnection and then start the order process?

I must be thick or something, wouldn't you submit an order now, to be connected once the previous owner moves away?

Yup. Due to limitations on the Chorus system, you can't submit a connection request while there's a disconnection request pending.

But I just rang Spark and they are prepared to connect on the 20th of May.

This rule only applies to Bigpipe?

Yep, unfortunately its a massive limitation on chorus systems that it is impossible to have a connection order placed for a line that also has a current disconnection order on it.  so it doesn't matter how much notice you give us,  if there is a tenant in that property right up until moving day there is nothing we can do to connect you.  :(

have a read of this. http://pages.bigpipe.co.nz/how-to-switch-isps-without-ruining-everything/  in particular the past section.

Spark will connect ADSL temporary connection the same day as disconnection and charge me $10 less for the eventual fibre connection.

Really not sure how I can stay at this point, will sleep on it.

They can't subvert the chorus system. They will not be able to hook you up any faster. If someone at spark told you that they are mistaken and probably haven't checked to confirm the existing line already has an open service order.

Eta: looking at spark pricing for ufb it's a lot more thanbigpipe. Where are you seeing the cheaper prices?

Nope, it applies to all ISPs, including Spark.

The spark person you spoke to is probably mistaken - it's highly unlikely they would check to see if there is an open service order on the line if you just called up with an enquiry.   If you were to actually place the order, then they would come back to you with a date several days after the 20th once the actual provisioning order went through.

My experience with BigPipe (after one new connection and one move), is that if they say it, they will endeavour to meet their commitment.

My experience with the "others" over the years has been somewhat less than positive. Sometimes accepting a little "perceived" inconvenience can outweigh change for change sake (or maybe not getting your own way?) - and the risks that go with that.

It really is a Chorus issue - not a BigPipe issue.

Is that a software limitation?

Yeah, it's actually $10 more expensive, but ends up being the same price on promotion, but I'd also swap my mobile over too and get an extra $10 a month.

Edit: Gigatown btw.

Is the OP talking about fibre or copper services? The processes for handling each are quite different.

The views expressed by me are not necessarily those of my employer Chorus NZ Ltd

I had the same issue with snap when I moved. It took some effort to convince them but what they did was submit the request in advance as a new connection on the secondary pair. Then when chorus came they just used the existing pair that was disconnected the day before. Didn't cost me any extra.

ADSL

If the outgoing connection is copper and the incoming order is also copper, Spark can indeed issue the incoming order prior to the disconnection of the existing line- but it will not start processing until the existing line is disconnected. It will just queue in the system.

The previous owner has ADSL and I will be getting a temporary ADSL until Fibre can be installed a couple of weeks later.

I have taken Spark at their word - they checked, double checked... 20th it is, they said.

as with anything I don't think they could guarantee it will happen that day.
