Hi Guys!

So I'm new to New Zealand and have a Nexus 5 D820 and I bought a skinny sim to use. Before I left I checked to see if my phone would work and everything said yes, that it would work on skinny! Now that I have bought a skinny sim, I am having trouble.

I have got no service and I have no idea why, I'm really bad with technology and hope you guys can help solve this problem for me.

The D820 is the north american variant which probably won't work here

You need the D821 which is the intl version that supports the relevant LTE bands

If I understand right.. You need the D281 not the D280 version to be able to use it it in New Zealand.

The D280 is the USA Version, the D281 is the Rest of the world version. Different supported frequencies.

Thanks for the replies but I really hope your wrong as this phone was not cheap and only a few months old. On several websites it tells me that this phone will work on skinny including the skinny website where I put in the IMEI nunber.

I'm so confused

Also it worked in Europe if that makes any difference

It might work if you disable 4G but it won't work on any LTE bands in NZ. The D281 was sold in NZ, the D280 never was so I hate to say you have the wrong phone for compatibility within NZ.

Also on skinny's website it does state:

Please note: The information in this compatibility checker is indicative only and doesn't guarantee that your phone will connect to the network so it is best to check your device's exact specifications to ensure it is actually compatible.

So it's not guaranteed to work if it says it will

Also check your network mode is set to automatic (or set to WCDMA), operator selection automatic

Have you activated your sim card by calling 456? Also, do you have any credit on your SIM and/or subscribed to a weekly or monthly combo?

Here are the specs for the two Nexus 5 models:

North America (D820) Nexus 5 model:

GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz

CDMA: Band Class: 0/1/10

WCDMA: Bands: 1/2/4/5/6/8/19

LTE: Bands: 1/2/4/5/17/19/25/26/41

Outside North America (D821) Nexus 5 model:

GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz

WCDMA: Bands: 1/2/4/5/6/8

LTE: Bands: 1/3/5/7/8/20

Skinny use the Spark network which uses WCDMA on Bands 1/5 (3G @ 2100/850 MHz) and LTE on Bands 3/7/28 (4G @ 1800/2600/700 MHz).

As you can see above, the D820 should be able to connect to the Skinny WCDMA/3G network, however it does not support any of the LTE/4G bands used in NZ.
