Gidday,

 

 

 

Wondered if anyone could chime in on my DSL speeds.

 

Located in a semi-rural area in the Waikato, we don't have Fibre here.

 

Was previously on the basic 'throttled' plan, and was experiencing average download speeds of about 300KB/s 

 

 

 

I upgraded to the 'Fast' plan and I am experiencing the  same speeds on torrents. averaging 300KB/S

 

Note: These speeds were tested with a well-seeded Linux distro.

 

 

 

 

 

 

You will see my speedtest results are a little more respectable than my P2P. 

 

I don't get these speeds in real life downloads though.

Your Speedtest results still don't come anywhere near your modems connected rate. Upload isn't bad, but download is pretty awful.

 

What were your speeds on the 'restricted' speed plan?

Speedtest on restricted was about the same up, and 1mb/s down.

 

 

 

FYI - Have a master filter attached.

Chorus came and dug up something out the front of the house and the speed increased to what it is now.

 

 

 

Have we reached the limits of NZ internet here or are  we experiencing a technical issue?

Are you connected via Wifi or Ethernet?

 

How many computers are on your network?

 

It could be the upstream is being saturated.

Yeah, connected via WiFi.

 

One computer, and two mobiles.

 

 

 

Any way I can tell if the upstream is being saturated?

 

I've now logged a fault with BigPipe, so I'll keep the thread updated with the result.

Definitely not a conklin with those DSL stats, so that's not the issue.

 

Most likely issue is saturating the upstream connection - less likely is a WiFi problem (rural areas generally have less interference, with the big exception being an electric fence).

 

Particularly with an asynchronous connection, saturating the upsteam bandwidth will absolutely kill the downstream also. Dropbox / iCloud / Google drive or some other backup / sync / upload / torrent going on any device on your network will do this. Turn all your devices off, and one by one do a speedtest on each - see what happens, and report back.

Your downstream connect rate is 14435kb/s, so dropping some for overhead, somewhere around 12-13 Mb/s (1.5MB/s).

As already mentioned, the p2p speeds could be saturated upstream. That speed test seems quite slow if you're not doing anything else on the connection at the same time... Could even be that the plan wasn't upgraded correctly from the 3Mb limited one.

judging by your speedtest results, the most likely thing here I would say is that your profile hasn't been correctly moved from the Basic plan to the Fast plan.

 

Seems too much of a coincidence that your speedtest is reporting exactly 3Mbps when your sync rate indicates around 14Mbps. 

 

Did you reboot your modem after we changed plan?  You do need to do that for it to take effect.
