I recently moved into a flat in North Dunedin. When I tried to get broadband, Telecom told me that the exchange my flat is connected to is too far away for broadband (max distance is 5km, the flat is at 5-6km)

Now is there any way to do get broadband after all?

I tried ringing Telecom to change exchange, but according to them we are already on the one closest to us. More ringing to get things clearer (I mean, I live in a city with 120,000 people, kinda weird that broadband is not available at my place) but the helpdesk just kept doing their standard linecheck...

Try calling other ISPs. Technically, it makes no difference, but their orders sometimes fall through the cracks and get connected - but don't expect anything over about 200kbps.

You should be able to get broadband at the 5km mark, its not going to be as pretty but it still should work.

I'd try and get them to install it anyway...

Ok, I will try that, they seem very reluctant to do anything, but I will just sign up and see how it goes.

Anything (even 200kbps) is better than a 48kbps dial-up line that you have to share with 5 people

Your only option is satellite or Woosh.

If Telecom says no - every other provider will say no as well, they use the same line check and the same systems to get you connected.

I highly doubt you'll be able to get connected. Go for woosh.

I checked Woosh and the wireless option is not available in the area where we live.

Yesterday I asked my neighbours tho and they say they have broadband (Ihug) and they only live 5 metres away from us! So I signed up with Telecom again. If they ring back ill just have to try to convince them to sign us up i guess... I mean if a house 5m away from us can get it, why can't we.

Try getting in contact with WIC - If your in coverage they can supply you Wireless Internet..

Ohh btw.. No drop outs..No packet loss.. and NZ pings 25-40ms.. Auz 60-80ms

Unlimited Bandwidth ( I used 30 - 45gb a month.. If you used 150+ they will call you and ask to keep it down.)

Well guess what...

After having talked to our neighbours I signed up to Telecom, and we got connected today:)

The speed is not bad either: downloading at a very respectable 400kb/s (using ReGet) and an upload of 700kbs

So its all sorted now, thanks for the help guys!
