We were happily on a public IP which was handy as we could restart our router if we need a new IP, for a good year. Then for some reason when we moved house we were put on a static IP. I specifically asked for everything to be the same. We werent charged for the static IP which normally BP do, so that also shows it was a mistake.

Anyone else experienced this?

I'm pretty sure that Bigpipe public IP's are static. You either pay the $45 for one or have CG-NAT.

We moved everyone who was on Public IP to Static IP a while ago, may have just not noticed until you moved house. If you would prefer to not be on Static IP we can always move you to CGNAT by submitting a support ticket - your choice :)

Can I ask why it was moved over?

CG-Nat is just carrier grade network? its not a filter like the one the aussies wanted to implement, i think it was some kind of firewall.

Sometimes its handy to have a new IP for certain games and for trials etc. Public IP non static was brilliant.

Why is Public Static IP better than CG-Nat? CG-Nat you can still change your IP when needed, ie trials, some games etc. But is cg-nat really insecure or something?

Probably just to keep network configuration consistent (and therefore easier to maintain.)

CGNAT is carrier-grade network address translation (NAT.) CGNAT allows one "public" IP to be shared among multiple customers, just like how "regular" NAT allows you to share the connection IP with all your devices at home.

Without CGNAT: your connection's IP will be publicly routable.

With CGNAT: your connection's IP will be a CGNAT address (similar to how your local network is probably in the 192.168.1.x range.)

The downsides of CGNAT over a static IP are:

  • it is difficult to make remote connections to your network
  • you share an IP pool with other people

What "games or trials" tie you to an IP address?

The real world reality is that most people who want to change their IP want it for more dubious reasons such as getting banned from servers. This then means some other poor unsuspecting person who then gets that IP has to deal with the consequences.

Them being blacklisted was my first thought as well. I can't think of a legitimate reason to change IPs often.

blacklisting yourself on the likes of denyhosts i can understand wanting another IP but surely if your in that situation you probably have a few extra IPs

man some of you guys just think negative immediately rofl. changing your IP does nothing to hide your traceability.

i have many trials of online software that i would like to give another go but cant because my IP has already been used. i want to see which one i want to go with now.

even just DNS services use your IP. so if you want to see if they still work you cant.

my thinking is cg-nat sounds dodgy if im sharing my IP in a pool. id rather have my own IP. sounds more secure. aside from the scenario of a rage gamer.

and thanks Det for explaining it.

I'm really curious to know about all of these services. Tying a trial to an IP makes no sence (except for possibly a DNS service).

Turning your question around - if a service was IP based why just because you want to keep trialing software should other people miss out? If IP addresses were in a pool and you just kept retrying them it would eventually mean none would work.

Most online services with trials are not tied to IP addresses for this very reason, lots use cookies in a browser for example.

correct, some are and some arent. ive never been blocked from a website so i dont know how they work, i imagine not IP.

Regardless my thoughts were Public Dynamic DNS was more secure than Static, from a security perspective only changing your IP every now and then I thought was a more secure tactic. You never know when you get a game rager lol, possibly paranoia but it has happened before.

But if CG Nat puts you in a pool then I think that negates the security aspect mentioned? Its less secure than a static IP?

As for the trials, yes DNS services sometimes use your IP, some dont. The good ones seem too. As I havnt used one for a long time and wanting to access content from my partners home country it would be handy to have one. But I can retrial them because I no longer can reset my IP.

I think my best bet is to just go by reviews and stick with Static IP with a firewall?

I presume you mean geo unblockers when you say 'DNS service's.

I haven't seen any real geo unblockers that don't use your IP address. They need your IP address to identify you and apply your personal settings. But the accounts are usually tied to an email address. If you want to 'retrial' a dns unblocker sign up for a trial with a new email address. You don't need to get a new IP address.

You should always use a firewall...

Gamer rage is a totally different situation, If you are the target of a DDoS it is unfair to simply change your IP and leave it up to the next poor soul to get the IP..

In the instance you are attacked, you should take ownership of that (Obviously if you directly cause and baited it, you certainly should look at changing things. but if it was unintentional, It happens..), discuss it with your ISP's NOC if at all possible straight away.

While it may seem like its easier to just change your IP and continue, your ISP will certainly much prefer its handled rather than affecting their network. If they have to chase you up about it happening, you certainly will be met with a fair bit more hostility.

IP should never be viewed as 'secure' ISP's are required by law to keep note of who has what ip when and if your paranoid about being identifiable to someone not so white hatted, well... highly likely you have left far more breadcrumbs than just an IP about.

Some of the DNS services use IP, the better ones. Yes you enter an email but it also takes your IP and Mac.

As for games, you are right, I never thought about the IP being released. Ive never had it happen, but Ive heard of it happening to friends, but they trash talk a lot. And I dont play those kind of cheap/free FPS games anymore like CS. More into RTS or Civ type games. So it shouldnt be a problem.

I decided to stick with static IP. Its just they didnt advertise we were being shifted from Dynamic so it confused me and I thought CG NAT was bad news and thought thats what we had been shifted to. Static CG Nat, eeeeek.

All is well and happy again.

I have to say Ive never had an outage or any problems with BP and I find their email support better than telephone support, the guys are onto it and understand what you are asking. Plus its cheap.

If I move to Fibre, is that also Static IP? Not sure how it works. But its outside the street and everyone in my complex which is single level is getting pamphlets from various companies, they spew out because people dont close their mail box, grrrr. Ive found the point of entry for the current copper, we are about 30-50m from the cabinet.

Currently on VDSL we only get about 30Mbps and 3Mbps and about 20-25 ms ping. Which is odd as we had much better connection when we lived much further from the cabinet in our last burbs house. We have a splitter, also there is only 1 line in and its use by the Router.

Fibre is the same as DSL: static or CGNAT.
