Hello.

i am wondering if there is an easy way to allow file-sharing with a WIn10 PC, an IPAD & a HG659b modem.

basically Ive got a folder onmy PC which ive enabled file-sharing..

Ive got an IPAd - connected to wifi - with my modem.

what i want - is

a) press a button on my IPAD,

b) it automatically scans the wifi network & locates my PC.

c) i then select the PC & then it asks me for any passwords etc (or no password)..

my wifi is passworded already & theres only me, myself & I using the wifi.

i HAVE :-

- Been to the pc & allowed a file-sharing on one of my folders.

- when i go to WINDOWS EXPLORER on my Pc i can easily go to "network" and find my pc...

i have downloaded 3-4 free diles/programmes on my IPAd for file-sharing / network etc - however they all expect me to put in my network host etc .

eg //WIN10/ (the name of my PC)

So far - no good, i cant even get that far - to acknowledge there is a network.

Is there a way so once ive connected to the wifi network from my IPAD - it AUTOMATICALLY loactes my network system/name & my PC name so all i have to do is click & it will try to connect and/or ask me my password.

I'll likely have to google etc to find help on setting a password - but rightnow, all im after is a decent Android programme (free) to actually find the network/pc name (without me needing to guess the network url/name)

Ultimate goal: Put files (pdf) into a folder on my PC so i can download/read on my IPAD.

Save yourself alot of headaches , if there arnt alot of files just use dropbox . Its not what you asked for, but good luck trying to get ipad to access Windows shares
It can sometimes be hard enough PC to PC ....

Android : try ES File Explorer .You will need to config/tweek to do what you want.

Try the local IP address of the computer instead of the computer name. The ~~android~~ ipad side probably can't see windows computer names.

I'm not 100% sure, on the modem side I would expect WiFi and LAN to be unrestricted between each other so no changes required on that.

Oh i misread the issue, the issue as I understand being the Ipad app cannot see your PC?

This is the most reliable. on the PC:

1. Make sure set to private network.

2. Under Advanced Sharing in the Network and Sharing Centre:

- turn on network discovery check auto set up

- turn on file and printer sharing

- use user accounts and passwords to connect, ie do NOT use homegroup

under all networks

- use 128bit encryption

- turn on password protected sharing

I'm guessing those file manager apps will save the connection and password when they have a connection so no problem there once it is set up.

Agree, Dropbox or OneDrive will be the easiest solution, as long as you just want to look at PDFs.

I have OneDrive on the PC, save the folders there, and view on the ipad using the onedrive app.

Google drive also works well. It's already available with a Gmail account. drive.google.com. Free up to 5GB. Edit: built in PDF viewer also.

On Android you'd just use ES File Explorer....and it sees all the Windows shares on the same network. You copy files to and from the device easily over wifi.

Not sure if there is an equivalent on iPad. One of the reasons I went Android was that it functioned more openly with respect to file transfers on and off the device. It basically works like Linux works.

Hmmm...

Ive downloaded ES FILE EXPLORER for my Ipad - waste of money.. - It gives me options for cloud services, but no 'network'...

ive since found a "file explorer" that works on IPAD & allows me to network.. (apparently)... unfortunately there are a few dozen programmes of that name so i cant identify which one it is.. to tell you.

However it will not allow me to FIND a network.. I keep trying & it says HOST NOT FOUND.

(Ive downloaded a dozen different file-type programmes on my IPAD tonight & none work...)

Can anyone recommend an IPAD programme i can use that DISCOVERS networks ? (this is NOT the same as discovering wifi. - i am already on wifi..)

Ie - i connect to a wifi - It tells me which networks/hosts are available (i dont know in advance). I click on a host & it tells me any sub-folders available etc...)

If i asks me for a password - thats fine - i'll fix taht up later.. i just want it to discover a nework..

Ps - when i use on my PC & go to the networked folder - it says :- \\WIN8

howwever i use that as the host on my IPAD & it says (of course) - UNKNOWN HOST.

- Me frustrated.

You need to solve / proof one thing before moving to another.

Firstly is your pc discoverable by the iPad? To do that download VLC. Within it see if you can log on to your PC. It will play media files but i have never tried pdf presumably it can't.

Once you confirm your pc is discoverable then let's talk about the apps(if any). You're talking about a stubborn trump i mean half eaten apple here.

I don't think there is an app that can discover home networks easily - unfortunately Apple have by design made the iPad and iOS devices very difficult to join other networks. What you want to do should be relatively simple but is very tricky. Also try using the IP address of the Windows computer to navigate to from the ipad file explorer apps. To get that open the command prompt in windows ('cmd') and type 'ipconfig'. Can try navigating to that instead of the PC name. e.g. //192.168.1.2/

See if Onedrive/Dropbox/google drive can achieve what you want to do. Treat the OneDrive folder on the Windows 10 PC as kind of virtual shared drive, and then access it from the OneDrive app on iPad.
