Hi all,

Does anyone know the equivalent settings for Bigpipe for this: https://www.pbtech.co.nz/NetgearISPSettings#SparkR8000

I had assumed it would be same (or very similar) to Spark instructions. But I've had no luck connecting the router to Bigpipe's UFB.

Any suggestions?

No VLAN, PPPoE with any username / password as long as it is not blank by default.

Thanks, I tried that (based on this thread: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=158&topicid=193460), but it didn't work for me.

Well that is the configuration so it sounds like you've configured something wrong. I don't have a Netgear device so can't test. You're just needing to simply do what is on this screenshot and miss out the VLAN configuration. Also ensure you're leaving service name blank:

That's definitely what I've configured, so I'm not sure why it hasn't worked. I'll keep trying, but if anyone has any other advice please let me know.

At the risk of appearing stupid, I'd like to note that I did finally get it connected...without the H659b modem. It seems the R8000 can connect *directly* to the ultrafibre ONT. That despite everything I read suggesting that the modem was required: e.g. the instructions that came with it, and https://kb.netgear.com/25343/How-do-I-cable-my-Nighthawk-X6-R8000-router?cid=wmt_netgear_organic

Anyway, just posting this so some other sap doesn't spend hours trying to connect their R8000 to a modem, when they have UFB.

The "modem" is technically the ONT for the world of UFB.

The term modem is really blurred by the general public..

It seems Bigpipe thinks I'd still be better off getting the modem connection working:

"Connecting to your ONT directly creates a PPPoE connection where the modem is not required. This however can limit people to the location of their ONT when they're surfing the net."

Any thoughts on that? I think they're saying the wifi range is affected.

Bigpipes statement in my mind relates to connecting a computer directly to ONT.

Note: The Huawei HG659 when in circuit operates as a router not a modem.

As to why you would think that the HG659 is required for any reason if you have the R8000 in circuit is beyond my understanding. Whats your wireless coverage like using the R8000?, given wireless coverage was the original problem.

If wireless coverage is still inadequate then maybe go with some data cabling and ceiling mounted access points.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

Yes Bigpipe clarified that they were talking about connecting a computer directly to ONT. However I'm only concerned about wifi coverage, which is fine now.

My main point was that Netgear's own instructions and help pages never once mention directly connecting the R8000 to an ONT. So a consumer like me would naturally think the modem is needed, since the instructions show that.
