Hi can anyone tell me if google wifi will work plugged straight into my fibre ONT or does it have to be plugged into another router?

I managed to brick my Archer C9 router and am in need of a new one. The reviews for google wifi look pretty good but don't want to spend the money and then find out I need another router.

Haven't tested myself - but in theory it would work as long as your Bigpipe connection doesn't have VLAN tagging enabled (default is no VLAN tagging for Bigpipe).

Note that Spark connections do have VLAN tagging, so you will need another router for them. Important to mention considering that Spark own Bigpipe. Have a look at the ISP VLAN tagging list thread.

Actually, I had some issues with pppoe, but I think they were from BigPipe, as pppoe would fail to authenticate from multiple routers/computers. So they disabled pppoe for my connection and now I have IPoE and it works a threat :)

Saying that, it should work with pppoe too :)

It doesn't do VLAN tagging, so unless you're with an ISP that doesn't need it (BigPipe is the only one from memory?) you'd still need a router

This is in the BP section so I'm assuming as such.

BP by default don't vlan tag, so Google WiFi will work straight off the bat.

This got me excited... but...

Spent 2 hours with BP and trying to set up my Google Wifi last night directly from ONT. Apparently they had enabled my account for all options (IPPOE, PPPOE and DHCP). Nothing worked trying factory resets and all options, the setup app just kept insisting it needed PPPOE authentication no matter what option chosen. In the end BP said they couldn't help and the setup of the router was my responsibility.

So... I reverted back to my original setup (ONT > Netcomm Modem > Google Wifi) and event that wasn't working anymore. After resetting my line by BP it was back to normal but what a drama.

I guess you got lucky @droopanu as it didn't work for me. It just feels like the Netcomm Modem is a waste of hardware in my setup :(

Have you had a look on youtube - there are a few tutorials on unbricking TP-Link routers.

This one is specific for the C9 and looks pretty straight forward - though the video goes for 30 minutes its perfectly watchable at double playback speed (only takes 15m to watch).

Worth a go - they are not cheap.

Have you tried connecting a computer directly to the ONT?

That is the best way to check that BP has set up your line correctly.

When you have IPoE enabled, your computer should get an IP address via DHCP and just start working.

You should also be able to setup PPPoE on your computer if you want to test PPPoE.

Regarding IPoE, you have to make sure BP does not configure a VLAN, as the Google Wifi does not support vlans :)

When I got my initial connection, there was something clearly wrong with the PPPoE auth on BP end, as it would fail on my OnHub, on my computer and on a ASUS router.
