I just got a new phone and installed the old skinny nanosim. Unfortunately, the phone cannot connect to the mobile network from my home; the connection is sporadic, in some rooms I get to see one or two bars for a few minutes then they are lost. I live in Sheffield, Canterbury. When I am in Christchurch, the phone works without any problem, and in some places in Darfield the phone can receive signals. I checked with the skinny site plugging the IMEI number of the phone and it said that the phone is not supported but this does not make sense to me. If the phone is not supported why does it catch network in Christchurch but not in Sheffield? Would greatly advice if you can advice how to fix this (without changing the phone)

You will find the device is only partly supported, this will result in exactly what your getting. Lack of connectivity to parts of the network.

 

 

 

More than likely your device is missing U850 which is most of the Voice service. 

 

Hate to say it, but another device is the solution here.

its possible the phone only supports the higher bands of the Spark/Skinny Network 2100mhz+ not the 850mhz band that most smaller areas would use, hence the signal issues in Darfield,Sheffield.

What make/model of phone is it?

 

It sounds like it doesn't support 850 MHz (the core network frequency) and is only picking up the 2100 MHz infill sites.

This is not a Skinny network problem but your handset is not compatible with 3G 850Mhz

So you need a new mobile phone or change to 2Degrees / VodafoneNZ or put up with poor coverage
