Hi guys,

I am putting a new jackpoint in for the dsl router to hang off. I found a cable under the house that was already connected and was just left coiled up so I have run that up into the lounge.

I am trying to find out what the colour code is for the outlet, the cable I have has:

Blue
White
Black
orange
green
red

and the jackpoint has numbers 1-6. I tried white to 2 and blue to 5, then reverse but still didnt get a dial tone. Cab anyone help?

Flamer.

Old cable will be red and white, or orange and black if they are wired as a second line. Green and blue are used as the ring wires in old installs with 3 wire sockets, but it seems that telecom techs use that for the unfiltered dsl signal when they change the wiring over.

Really on the old cable with new sockets there is no standard, and noone can tell you if the last installer followed them anyway so you really have to check the other end of that cable, all the way back to your dsl filter, the unfiltered line is usually only joined thru to your origional adsl outlet so you may have to go joining wires together in other sockets to get it to that cable.

Current telepermit specs are that you use blue+bl/white for the first pair.

The problem however is that anybody before you could have used any colour they felt like as many DIY installs are a disaster because people simply don't know what they are doing. Older 3 wire installs also don't use blue/bl+white.

You really need to look at the other sockets and see what colours are being used, allowing for the fact if it's an older house it may well be using 3 wire master + extension sockets. Mixing new 2 wire and older 3 wire sockets is not recommended.

If you plugged the cordless in to check it when the adsl router was still active at the place it used to be connected then it will be, since an unfiltered outlet will have all the adsl signal present on it, so is nothing to worry about.
