Hi

I am trying to find out if we need to to go through the Telepermit process to bring WCDMA devices into NZ and 'legally' connect on the XT network. The devices currently have C tick for Australia.

I guess it begs the question if you put a XT sim into a Vodafone approved phone are you supposed to get a telepermit?

Thanks

Greg

No telepermits "needed" but that of course means support will be more limited due to the differing setup of the device you are using, Telecom will try to help but no guarantees things will work as they should.

Also be warned, many phone have very custom software builds in them which may make things difficult (as an example, My Vodafone sold Nokia 6121 phone has "UMTS only" removed from the network menu settings which degrades the experience by dropping to GPRS a lot)

What phone are you looking at bringing in?

No, you can place the SIM into any device although if it interferes with the network, they may not be too happy.

Yeha paradoxsm is right, no telepermits required
Just make sure you get the right phone as above too, look for a US version which supports Sprint i think it is? or 850 UTMS, it'll work well :)

I'm still waiting for the Samsung M8800 850 UTMS version to come up for sale :( they still only have the 900s.

Just make sure it's unlocked and not custom designed software for AT&T or anything and you'll be fine :)

No, Sprint and Verizon Wireless are CDMA. IF you are getting some American phone you will be looking for AT&T versions which is the network supporting 850MHz. Or Australian Telstra.

The only problem is that those phones are bound to be SIM locked.

I am thinking about bringing in a HTC touch HD (t8285) from aussie.
HTC says it should work no worries on the XT network. Hard finding many people in aussie that sell em and will ship over here thou.
the couple of places i have found so far say that they are sim unlocked.
Wish i could find someone in NZ that will import them thou :)

The market for 850MHz 3G phones is virtually non existant here due to the fact that the network has not launched yet. As soon as it does, and the number of people willing to buy phones goes from a few dozen to many thousands, the economy of scale will be there, and people will start parallel importing, or be more willing to ship to NZ based on volumes.

Network not far away now , could be a good time to start importing and get the jump on the competitors :)

and also the software will be highly customised.

Avoid Sprint, Bell, and Verizon at all costs, as Mauricio has said, they are CDMA phones and Telecom will not connect alien phones to the old CDMA network..

There are a few phones already around at local/overseas suppliers that will work. Be warned though that some dealers do not have a clue what they have actually imported and may get the frequencies wrong. (mate has an E71-3, bought it for use with Vodafone and realized that it'll be sweeter on XT being an 850MHz UMTS device.)

My advice, see what is officially available and make your decision after that.

Thanks for all the replies. I should have made it clearer at the start. I am talking about a HSDPA Modem that we have written an embedded linux application for. It comes in two flavours - 850/2100 or 900/2100. Customer is a Telecom customer and just need to make sure we dont need to jump through any regulartory hoops. No sim locks etc

We use them all over Australia on Telstra NextG (WCDMA850) so assume they should hook straight up to the XT network.

For those of you who will be at ceBIT I can give you a 'show and tell'.

Cheers

Greg

I flashed mine to a generic firmware that restores the UMTS only option.  The phone was almost unusable at home otherwise, and Vodafone seemed to have no idea how to fix it.  If you do a search, you should find a couple of threads on how to do it.

Vodafone "locked it up" in the first place, I expected a few Vodafone-live links but not removel of network options, the whole point of getting it was to use UMTS900 as an interim solution (and the comparison tests when XT launches) when I was out in the rural zones, it jumps to GSM all the time resulting in dropped calls and slooooow data instead.

I would just flash it to "generic" but Nokia have patched the firmware and the sis-unsigned hack will no longer work which is utterly crucial to development.

I await the 850MHz XT and hopefully devices with less customisation.

Flashkiwi, you should be all good to go if it works on the Australia Next-G as XT seems to essentially be the same. I look forward to a few of the 850MHz modules becoming available and I can retire the GSM stuff.
