Id forgotten all about the CDPD network…We had a PCMCIA CDPD data card at work, Sierra Wireless if I remember correctly?

When did Telecom turn off CDPD, was it about when 1x was rolled out?

Only one DAMP's network. A couple of the devices were the Nokia5120 & 6120.

What about the CT2 network that Telecom Mobile tested in the early 90's?

Telecom had about half a dozen sites in the Wellington CBD and you could roll up to one and make a call but from memory you couldn't accept calls on them. Technology came from BT who were doing lots of trials as well.

I remember playing with one of the phones, very cool concept at the time since the phones were very small compared to mobiles at the time.

Public CT2 died about later 1990 when the  samples  they got for the 1990 Commonwealth games had problems with overheating. You couldn't hold on to them.   Lived on for a further 8 years as a Nortel PBX product with handsets sourced from AT&T and later Nortel.. Was superseded in about  1999 by DECT on the Nortel platform..  And we won't go into the DAmps PBX solution..

There was the IS-54 version which used the AMPS analogue control channels and was a piece of rubbish (it wasn't marketed and they only used it to relieve congestion), then IS-136 which was totally digital. I can't remember what years each came out but when IS-136 came out they basically pretended that IS-54 had never existed. That may be what Richms is referring to.

And the ideas of CT2 with "home and away" still lives on today, with femto cells to allow your regular cell to become your home phone at home phone rates.

Scary, Yes I remember some of the old and short-lived technologies. I found my CDPD stuff the other day, Sierra cards and serial modules. One is still brand spanking new.

I have corrected certain dates but this is purely from memory especially cdpd. I'll pull out my old data on plans and Bellsouth/Vodafone upgrades (like GPRS)

1987 AMPS @ 800MHz (025 Network) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93D9qc9GbRI&fmt=18)
1994 ??? CDPD packet data overlay for AMPS.
1996 TDMA/D-AMPS @ 800MHz (I had a Nokia 2120, parents had a 2110 GSM)
2000 CDMA2000 IS95 original 14.4 Kbps EVRC 027 network.
2001 CDMA 1xRTT 144 Kbps
2001 CDPD amps overlay switched off (left me high and dry at the time)
2004 EVDO @ 800MHz (T3G Network)
2006 EVDO rev A
31 March 2007 TDMA/D-AMPS Network closed down
eta 21 May 2009 W-CDMA @ 850MHz + 2100MHz imain centres (XT Network)
2012 CDMA/EVDO Network expected closure

I think CDPD was a little later than 94, I think it might have been 96. Deciding an actual date is a bit hard since I don't think they ever really launched it. There was talk of a soft launch, eg we have this new thing but we won't ever tell anyone about it. I think there was only ever one real commercial customer.

Also you need to add GSM to the list, they had that going for a while from late last year although they never launched it to customers.

Yes CDPD was 1996 Courier Post was a customer they used 3W Sierra Wireless modems in vans. There were a couple of other customers, can't remember who. Also, there was the Novatel Wireless CDPD Mistral which was a sled for the Palm devices. Back in 1996 I had wireless email and internet on my Palm. Fancy that!
