On page 14 of the Herald on Sunday is an article on coverage between voda, Telecom CDMA and Telecom WCDMA

They ran some tests in below ground car parks...

What made my jaw drop was this statement from Vodafone spokesperson Alison Sykora..

"[our] network coverage covers 96.8 percent of New Zealand and was more reliable than XT in some ways.

"For example if you have a vodafone 3G phone and you go somewhere with less coverage is will just drop down to 2G."

Trying to say that dropping down to 2G is some how better than a network that is 3G all the time is a new league of spin!

Any views expressed here are my own and do not necessarily represent the views of my employer Telecom NZ

I saw that too and had a bit of a chuckle. Because having my iPhone 3G constantly drop to 2G even when I'm in a 3G area (a small place called Auckland) is great - far more reliable than XT. Thanks Vodafone.

Sounds like some of the advice handed out at your local Dick Smith's :P

If that's a direct quote then the statement "network coverage covers 96.8 percent of New Zealand" is also pretty misleading. It's actually "Coverage where 97% of New Zealanders live, work and play" which is very different.

Don't run my phone in 3G as I don't want the short battery life.

Speaking of battery life it's interesting to observe greater battery life over 3G in the past week. Having asked around Vodafone have apparently made some changes to their PCH which I've noticed has made a difference to battery life.

"For example if you have a vodafone 3G phone and you go somewhere with less coverage is will just drop down to 2G."

... What a bad example, so they are saying that their s***e 3G network drops out you get 2G. With XT you have 3G the whole time.

Are they trying to say that 2G has better reception than 3G or that 3G is s***e?
I mean it dosnt make sence, its like them saying that their 2G is 100% whereas their 3G is 96% or whatever...

Actually yet another misquote from the Herald (Really? Gosh!).

"While Telecom says its new XT network covers 97 per cent of where Kiwis work, live and play..." - Telecom changed this some time back to "Live and Work".

May seem minor, but it does make quite a bit of difference.
