Have recently purchased new iphone from Vodofone and connected to Telecoms Xt network. All seems great except that every inwards call or Txt shows as "Unknown Caller" even though these calls or txts come from people that are in my Contacts list. Phone is running Version 2.2.1. Any ideas to fix this frustration would be most welcome.

My experience is that the iphone is not as "smart" as other phones and if your phone book is in internaitonal format (+64 x xxxxxxx) then a number coming in with national format (0x xxxxxx) is not recognised.

The comments I write on this forum do not necessarily reflect the views of my employer and as such cannot be taken as official statements of my employer.

Actually it is that smart, I have noticed since changing to my XT sim that the number needs to be stored as both +64 27xxxxxxxx and 027xxxxxxxx or +64 21xxxxxxxxxx or 021xxxxxxxxxxx

Easy way to fix it is to save both formats of the number in the contact with the same label i.e 'mobile' home' etc etc

Cheers

nzbullet:
That sounds like a pretty standard phone setup, but its not automatically identifying a +64 xxxxxx number as local or national call and applying it to your previously saved 02xxxxxxx number.
You literally have to save multiple instances of the number in its national and internation format in order for the iPhone to identify it correctly.
Hopefully the next version will be better, suprised another one is almost out already.

It seems to be a Telecom issue not an iPhone issue - the iPhone caller ID works perfectly on Vodafone, all my numbers are in +64 xxxx format and all calls I receive match up to numbers in my address book correctly (e.g. 021 123 456 matches when I have +64 21 123 456 in my address book).

There won't be a definition for 53005 in the number format dictionary in the firmware - this is required so that the iPhone can correctly decipher the different numbers being used.

There *is* one for Vodafone (53001), which is why you get a space between "+64" and the rest of the number when you dial on the keypad with a Vodafone SIM inserted. It decides which section of the dictionary to use based on the MCC/MNC (530=MCC, 01/05/etc=MNC) of the home network the SIM is registered with.

With the previous firmware you could edit the dictionary (it was just a plist) and set up all the correct parenthesising and stuff.. I had "(0800) xxx yyy", "(0x) abc defg", "+64 (x) ..", "+64 (2x) .." etc etc.

I have an iPhone 3G I purchased from and used on Vodafone. My numbers are stored in +64 21... format and caller ID works fine on XT.

Hi Thanks to all who posted here. Looks like the problem is all OK now. Went to Telecom only to find that I hadnt been set up with Caller ID !!!, which should have been an auto default on my plan, so got that fixed. At lease this was a good start, but still only received the actual number calling, no contact list recognision as my contact list. Numbers in my contact list were entered as 021xxxxxx,07xxxxx etc which is no good on iphone, adjusted to +64 21xxxxxx,+64 7xxxxxx etc and all good.
Thanks again for all your help

I have this problem but not sure that having Telecom tinker with my caller ID will resolve it.

Seems to be that if the number is formatted as +64 in my contacts then the ID is unknown for an incoming call but known for an incoming text messages. And the reverse if the formatting is 027, 021, etc.

The double entry method (ie: both formats) works fine but is not the kind of elegant/ideal solution I am after.

I also have this problem and currently have to have numbers entered in the +64 format as well as the local format.

I also agree that it is a carrier setting issue as it was working perfectly on Vodafone and then again prior to the OS 3.0 update.

I have a theory, from what I have read, that my iPhone must have lost the carrier settings that it gained, whilst on Vodafone, during the update.

I also believe there may be nothing we can do until telecom officially supports iPhone as apple have restricted manual update of carrier settings in iTunes, if I am wrong please inform me as I would really like to have a fully functioning iPhone.

I've done the carrier settings update, as per the forum on geekzone, but still having the +64 27 and 027 issues. Anyone else finding this is still an issue?

There are two issues being discussed here:

1. Unknown Caller being shown for everyone.
2. Number shows, but doesnt show name.

1. I had this problem, there is a GSM code I typed in that re-enabled it, do a search for GSM Codes in Google.

2. This is an iPhone problem. I have been (well, had, since I sold it) having this exact issue when i was using the iPhone 3G on the Vodafone network.
The iPhone by default, isn't able to decipher numbers that are longer than a certain length. For example; mine was able to recognize numbers like: 021 123 456.

But was not able to recognize numbers like: 021 123 456 78

I was able to fix this originally by editing a file on the phone itself (requiring Jailbreak, + SSH etc) [But Apple have since changed the file type of their Caller ID file etc].
However, since they (Apple/Vodafone) haven't bothered to fix it on the supported carrier in NZ, I wouldn't count on it ever being fixed on Telecom any time soon (Even if they do officially support it in the near future).

Caller ID formatting is also another iPhone related problem.

EDIT: Just fixed the spelling - 12pm is too early in the morning to pay attention.
