Forgive me if this is a foolish questions, but I have recently moved to using the Telecom XT network from Vodafone on my iPhone. Previously on Vodafone all txts arrived as single messages, regardless of size. Now they seem to be split into multipart messages. Any logical reason for this?

my vodafone texts get broken up when they are over the limit...? Maybe it's to do with the phone?

Hmm.. maybe, but on Vodafone I only ever got one txt alert, but on Telecom they definately arrive as two seperate messages. Perhaps the corporate Vodafone plan I was on allowed for larger incoming txt packets? -shrugs-

XT network does not support 8 bit binary messages from external networks.

A multipart SMS is sent as a 8 bit binary SMS with a flag changed in the UDH header so the phone at the other end knows to join these back together. 8 bit binary SMS's are also used for OTA settings and WAP push messages.

At present none of these are supported from any SMS interconnections beyond the XT network. If you send them from a Vodafone handset multipart messages will be split into two messages and other binary SMS's such as OTA settings are converted to 7 bit ASCII so you'll get jibberish text in the message and do not work.

Telecom are aware of the issue.

Ah fair enough - makes sense. So I guess the revese is also true if I send large multipart messages to Vodafone? Any idea if the interconnections will support 8bit binary any time soon?

Hopefully being worked on. It only occurs when messages go "off-net" and not within XT.

I have generated some solid cases and sent examples to be sent to the people involved, will be interesting to see the 8-bit interoperability stuff.

i hate it that i have to stop part way through a long message, and write another. Would be so much easier if I could send multi part messages to all networks.
