Has anyone tried using a US N79 on XT? Or know where to get one?

according to nokia the n79 supports only WCDMA 900/2100 MHz
The XT network is mostly WCDMA 850 MHz so the n79 will not work (except where 2100mhz coverage is available)

From the Nokia site that you linked to

WCDMA 850/1900 MHz

That's why I specified the US version. However the only version I can find for sale in New Zealand is the euro/asian one.
I was originally going to buy the N85, however after a hands-on at the telecom store here decided against it as I'm not a fan of sliders and it felt like it would soon fall apart.
Interestingly neither of the vodafone stores here had even a dummy N85 to show me.

Sorry, must be a misprint, it says WCDMA 900/2100 MHz under 'Data Network' but WCDMA 850/1900 MHz under 'Operating Frequency' I should have read it more carefully.

I have ordered one from newegg through global eshop (requires an american express) I expect it to cost $NZ620-700 (including nz gst)
Import gsm ship to NZ but their price seemed a bit steep to me.
Will let you know how it goes when it arrives.

I was considering buying one from amazon through BuyUSA.co.nz, however at first glance global eshop appears to be cheaper (30 USD for shipping + somewhere around $80 NZD customs charges?), so I'll be very interested to hear how much yours ends up costing. At least if you don't like it it'll probably be snapped up on trademe.

Global eshop also charge a fee of 5% of the cost of the goods and the USA shipping (unless the mechant accepts foreign cards, which most don't)
