$500 new connection fee!

So im moving to a new house around the corner from where I live now (semi-rural rotorua) and I talked to telecom and they said it would cost $500 big ones to put a new connection into the property.
The wiring in the house is all there and the wiring from the road to the house is all there too, it just needs to be connected up.
How can they justify the 500 dollar fee, and is there any way around it?
I dont want to use mobile/satellite broadband as I am a heavy user.

Once again, hating NZ's broadband infrastructure and telecom in particular.

If all the cables are there then it should cost $50/jack in the premises.

Told them that and they said because there had never actually been a phone line connected to the premises that it would cost 500.

I just checked Telecom's website and it does states that for New Connections (not re-connection) that price is P.O.A (price on application/arrival).

Do whatever you want to do man.

Sounds typical for the one off charge for connecting a line for the first time, they have to do more (obviously) than with a reconnection.

Basically harden up or choose an alternative method of telecomunications.

If you want it that bad you will pay $500 Telecom is a business not a charity

Telecom is a business but they also control a national service which is much needed and I struggle to see what will cost them 500 dollars for the set-up when all the wiring is there. The service they are supposed to be providing is their business (which im sure they still profit hugely off).

I suggest you read your post again you wanted a way around the $500 fee

I went through this as well a few years ago with our new house.
Never managed to get around it and had to pay the $500 :(

Never managed to get around it and had to pay the $500 :(

Good (or bad) to know. I would pay the fee but seeing as its a rental property I would rather not as I may only be there 6 months or so.

If it's a rental you could try and convince the landlord to pay it, or if you're only going to be there for 6 months consider mobile broadband if you're not too heavy a user.

Telecom charge the fee in places where they are the incumbent without competition. The way around it is to move to Pukekohe where there is Compass Wireless. Telecom only charge $69 for new connections in Pukekohe due to competition!
