Folks, I have a few spaces available for a visit to one of Telecom's exchanges in Auckland. This will happen on the 19th November.

I have a couple of names already but we can have four, plus two as a backup.

If you are interested so see how it all works then reply to this thread. I will get some names from here and confirm more details later.

There's a height restriction sorry Neal.  The exchange will be crammed with 5 people, let alone 4 people and a giant Tongue out

If they are anything like they were when I worked for Telecom faults back a few years there will be plenty of space. Back in the old days they used to house a workforce of technicians at each exchange (and then take 2 weeks to connect a phone lol). Once it became the Telecom we know and love everything was stripped down so that there is just a frame with all the lines terminated on it and another frame for stuff like DSLAMs etc.

The only ones chock full of kit (in Wellington anyways) were central and courtney.

Woohoo! Sounds Awesome ... I assume that this will be during "normal person" hours? Depending on the time I will be in!

People will be visiting Mount Albert but are touring a few different locations to see cabinets and roadside pits etc, and assemble at 12:45pm, leaving at 1pm.

I will contact people today to confirm interest.

Obviously I can't go (I'm in Invercargill), but while studying at SIT I had the chance to tour the Invercargill central exchange. Rather fascinating. Probably the best bit was when we were heading to go into the basement, where the phone lines run into the building, to find it completely flooded - right up to the lightbulbs, and the TVNZ live broadcast cubby-hole.
