If you (or someone you know) are using TTY over the 027 network, I would like to know what hardware you are using, and any pitfalls, tips or tricks you may have to share.

Assuming that by TTY you mean a "TTY / TDD (Telecommunications Device for the Deaf)" ?

I haven't used it myself, but from memory I'm pretty sure I've seen the option in the menu for a few of the ?Kyocera's?, and Nokia appears to have a couple of adapters for some of their phones.

Yeah - there is plenty of information out there about them, but finding one available to buy is a different story.

Ahh. That makes a bit more sense.

I've never played with TTY/TTD devices but it looks interesting.

Sounds like someone floating around inside Telecom already had a bit of a play however.

The DPSG unit appears to be from:

But there's also a few references around the net to it being sold as a Sony Ericsson product. No signs of anyone in NZ/AU that sells them though.

www.deafquip.co.nz appears to do an older unit they list as compatible with 025. no ideas if it the tone duration on 027 is a problem for it. and at least one part of Telecom seems to list some units (sprint?) for sale via www.nzrelay.co.nz

And that pretty much exhausts what I can think of, short of getting ahold of a couple of each to test with.. assuming you can find a distributor in NZ that sells them. : /

Thanks. I had seen some of that already. One of the big problems is that we need a unit compatible with 027 so that we can use a bluetooth phone (to tie in with a bluetooth hearing aid).

I appreciate the efforts...

Yeah, I figured you'd already have some of it, but was hoping it might spur a few other people into posting aswell. That plus I know how the various telecom dept's don't always forward information to each other.

I can imagine the fun you're going to have throwing a bluetooth hearing aid into that brew, but I'll run away now (for real this time).

I remember talking to Deaf friend about TTY via mobile (voda & telecom) and she thought that none of the networks were compatible with TTY in NZ however I am confused now with what you are actually wanting to connect. My idea of TTY is a device that sits on my desk which I can put a telephone handset on and type to someone esle with the same device (landline).

Your question puzzles me as I thought you were talking about such a device to use with a mobile phone to another with landline TTY, but bluetooth hearing aid???

EDIT: Just remembered a few years ('93) ago another Deaf person who had a portable tty that he connected with his mobile. I wasnt into mobiles so no idea what network it would have been but I am guessing it would have been Telecoms analogue network.

You are right about what a TTY is, the bluetooth hearing aid is a completely different item.

We want a TTY + mobile phone (027)

the stipulation for the mobile phone is that as well as being TTY compatible it should be bluetooth for use with the BT hearing aid (which means no 025).

At Present the Nokia handset are the only ones that are working sussesfully. I suggest that you use a Nokia at this stage with any TTY device.

Most Telecom 027 nokias are compatible with a TTY hearing aid device (loop set) that telecom stores can stock.
