I live in Christchurch and have Telecom's 40gb plan but for the past few weeks speed in the evenings seems terrible. Often I can't stream video without a wait, and tonight just within the past hour it's gone from slowly loading video to it's never gonna finish. Tested with multiple sites.

This is my local speedtest.net result:

And this is LA:

Seriously, upload is faster than download? :/

With such poor performance to a local speedtest site, it looks like a line fault/router problem/LAN issue.

What are your router ADSL stats? What are you syncing at?

The PRO Plans are generally very fast from my recent experience with them.

Thanks :) I never used to have a problem, but I have to admit in the day it's mostly no problem still. That's why I assumed it was a Telecom issue.

I've got a Linksys WAG160N and it says my downstream is 10555 Kbps and upstream 945 Kbps. I'm using it with an ethernet cable, so that rules out wireless as the problem.

The rest of the stats if it helps are:

Encapsulation:    RFC 2364 PPPoA
Multiplexing:    VC
QoS:    UBR
PCR:
SCR:
Autodetect:    Disable
VPI:    0
VCI:    100
Enable:    1
PVC Status:    Up

I wonder if I call them tomorrow evening if they can do a line test? Similar to if you have a problem with calls on a line?

Now it seems fine again for the moment.

And the Jet Stream test says "Your line speed is approximately 2932.5 Kbps or 359.4 KB/sec"

I did stream a bunch of HD videos before it went bad this evening, but as far as I know Telecom don't throttle video on the Pro plans. Confusing.

Internet has been quite patchy here for the last couple of days, but I'm going to blame the weather. It was terrible early this morning but seems ok now (11Mbps down and just under 1Mbps up). Same 40Gb plan.

I've noticed that streaming video off Youtube has been very temperamental for the past couple of weeks. Hopefully whatever the problem is will get sorted.

man if you seriously want it sorted I suggest getting a couple of details and possible solutions together and ring Telecom then go through some of their generic solutions, then when you get put through to a technician mention the possible fix's if i did that twice and it worked for different issues.

hmm .....your speed sounds awkward......you should just ring telecom and check your ADSL stability and observe for few days.....

btw, how far is your house to the Exchange?

Your best bet is to keep a eye on your Linksys ADSL Stats especially when it's slow speed time, and don't be afraid to log a ticket with Telecom as there may be a intermittent line fault, they can put a 24 hour trace on your connection and see whats up.

I had a connection the other day which was syncing fine around 6 Megabits, then drops down to 100kbps (yes 2x dialup) downstream but keeps it's upstream at approx 700kbps.

a modem restart fixes it, and to be honest I have not logged it with Telecom either, but something similar may be happening with you.

Or not. :)

Thanks for your help guys, I logged a ticket with Telecom tonight (was getting 0.30Mb/s download to New York, and just over 800kbps on Telecom's speed tester) and they couldn't spot any problems with my line. They also said I'm 2km from the nearest phone exchange.

It remained the same after a modem restart while I was on the phone with them. This is afterwards:

He suggested I try a new filter next, and perhaps if that doesn't solve it a modem. Luckily I can borrow some at work and test tomorrow evening.

Thanks again!
