I have a third part modem (SMC7904) connected to an telecom land line using Xtra as the ISP. I am getting adsl lock and DNS and ip address but still canot acess the internet.

I have had a number of conflicting stories from Customer Service today about logon and password for the ADSL. The SMC modem needs to have some logon and password. I have used the user.xadsl@xtra.co.nz as logon. I have been told 1) I don't need a password (but the SMC needs some sort of password). 2) Any password as long as it is 6 characters. 3) The correct password for the ADSL account.

Can anyone advise me on the correct answer. We don't need or have static IP or port 25 access.

it is always the third option, every user has a set password which you need to enter into your router/modem to authenticate. I don't know why they told you the first two options as they are stupid.

Thanks. Don't understand why Xtra CS has different answers for something so basic as ADSL authentication.

Newer Telecom Xtra accounts no longer require any user name or password, anything will do to keep the modem happy, as the new connection setup associates account with the physical DSLAM port and does not use the PPPoA authenticaion. Older ADSL1 connections/accounts that use the PPPoA authenticaion obviously need the user name and password to be correct.

I dont know the specifics but it all depends on what DSLAM and what BRAS sits behind it that determines what authentication is used in each instance, purhaps others like NZBNW can advise.

I would suggest using anything but the user name user.xadsl@xtra.co.nz as it used to be a test login only and gave very limited access ( or so I recall )

Try using a username like yourrandomname.xadsl@xtra.co.nz and any old password.

This will work with XTRA ADSL connections but wont give you a fixed IP if you have asked for one ( its caught a few users out there )

My Thomson wireless modem connected to Xtra just has the pre-loaded user.xadsl@xtra.co.nz credentials in it and works just fine.

From memory the username/password in the modem don't matter unless you need to have static IP or Port 25 options enabled, Authentication is based on your line number/port details for all connections.

Just to confirm, you are syncing up both DSL and PPP?

If so, the problem could be DNS related (try using Google DNS to test) or maybe something as obscure as the MTU value in the modem.

Is this a new connection?

The user name is user@xtrabb.co.nz with anything as the password - I usually use abc123

Correct, Telecom Retail do not use user names and or passwords for ADSL authentication. You will need your user name and password as stated for opting out of port 25 filtering and to use a static IP address.

I have tried a number of logons and passwords and I get an ADSL connection, IP address and DNS so the problem is obviously elsewhere. Brand new Modem SMC7904 with 0/100 PPPoA VC-MUX

Just spent some time talking to CS this morning and understand a bit better now. Post Jan 2010 new connections do not need a logon or password so any .xdsl will do as the connection is specific to the line it is on. Als new DNS servers for post Jan2010.

Old connections with static IP did not correct logon password.

So yes it is post Jan2010 connection and I will try an get hold of the Telecom supplied moden to check. I have also found an old modem to check the setup with as well.

Even if the connection does not require the un/pw alot of modems don't seem to like you leaving the fields blank. Usernames as long as they end in @xtrabb.co.nz, @xtra.co.nz or @jetstreamgames.co.nz are fine and any password between 6-8 characters is fine.

If you are getting an error, get the first un/pw i said into the router with the correct vpi/vci ect then turn it off for 10 minutes and try again.

Most connections do not need your specific username/password, but you do need that if you have a static IP (although that is changing)

If you don't have a static IP or port 25 unblocking, you can use a generic username in the username field BUT you should use something ending in '@xtrabb.co.nz'. The example above user@xtrabb.co.nz is a default and will work. The password is free but we often recommend using "telecom" as there have been routers in the past that needed a password and I think there may have even been one that didn't like passwords with 6 or less characters.

The reason that the right hand side of the username (@xtrabb.co.nz) is important is that on some connections this part of the username is used to determine which ISP should be doing the authentication.

Thanks guys, lots of help there understanding the ins and outs of Xtra broadband. I finally got to the bottom of the problem today. I dropped the SMC7904 back to ADSL1 and it locked quickly every time. I did this after speaking to the tech support at Computer Dynamics who supplied it. They told me that when Telecom rolled out ADSL2 not all the DSLAMS were configured in the same way so you can find some brands of modem will work with ADSL2 in some areas but not others and visa versa with other brands of modem.

Any comments from anyone on that scenario? Are there issues with inconsistency in ADSL2? I can believe that could have happened.

Using ADSL1 still gives 8-9mbs connection so fine for the application.
